45 - 50 miles round trip daily. Also a former (current) BMW owner, 7 of them total over the last 10 years or so. Best of both worlds.

Great Daily Driver for any trip further than 30 miles and bad weather regardless of distance.

2006 LX 470 with a set of Michelin LTX M/S2 P275/65R18 114T 79828

Highly recommend these tires! Warranty up to 70,000 miles but if rotated and vehicle kept properly aligned, my goal is to get 90k miles out of them.

I am the third owner, purchased a year ago with 72,000 miles.

Carfax showed properly maintained at local Lexus/Toyota dealerships. Just Basic oil changes.

Main operational gear components fluids a month after purchase where changed out with Amsoil Full Synthetic. (Both Diffs, Trans Axel, Transmission.)

Changed the Plugs.

Cleaned out the throttle body and SeaFoamed the vacuum tube to clean as much internal carbon build up as possible.

Changed out the terrible OEM Head Ligths.

82,500 miles on the ODO and I special order Penzoil Ultra 5w-30 at every 5,000 mile DIY oil change. Toyota OEM Fuel Filter best quality choice in my opinion.

Fuel Filter just a few days ago.

91 Octane Only since ownership and I introduce Lucas Upper Cylinder Lubricant at every 3k miles and SeaFoam at every 5k miles.

I intend to have this "Japanese Tractor" forever!

Great foundational vehicle.

For shorter trips I have a 2003 BMW M5.

Which I will keep original with currently 78,000 miles on the ODO.

Only mod would be a high performance complete exhaust system to let that naturally aspirated 400hp S62 V8 sing to the heavens.

S62 is the engine in the e39 M5. You have an M62 in a 4.4 x5. If you swapped the engine then that's cool.

???

The S62 is standard in the E39 M5 -

I have an E39 M5 -

I don't own an X5.

I think you are confused - thanks for the post however.

Sorry man. Read that wrong. Funny how we know the codes of all these engine but can't remember birthdays and anniversaries.
S82. Insert big smile

No worries -

I owe you a well deserved zinger.

Been daily driving mine for past 12 years ('99 LX 470)

I have about 180,000 miles and besides servicing it around 90K and recently at 175,000, the truck has been super reliable. I have never been stranded up until last week when my ignition shaft broke. Part was $160 + $100 labor and I am back in the game again (what would I do with out you MUD) .

Since I plan on keeping it for few more miles :D, I recently spent close to $1500+ on various maintenence items like:

Timing belt and all other accessory belts
Thermostat along with the T-hose which was all cracked ( thanks MUD for guiding us to get that replaced as a preventatitive maintenence)
Water pump
radiator hoses
Plugs
Brakes (Rotors/Pads)
All fluids (Power steering/brake/transmission/coolant/engine/LSD)
Drive shaft taken out and lubed (no jerking at all)
AHC flushed with three OEM fluid cans (hats off to MUD again)

Over all, even at 180,000 miles, I have no reluctance taking this truck out to any where in US not to mention the continuis DD duties.

It's just dawned on me how regional this is. If you live in SoCal and have a 40-50 mile RT commute the last thing you'd want is an LC with $4.85 premium gas.

In Colorado during winter for that same 40-50 mile drive, you'd want nothing else!

I feel that some prefer the extra cost of gas with the extra benefit of getting around hold ups in the road and sitting a bit above traffic with some added safety ;)

Do you really sit above traffic when more than half are trucks?

SoCal resident here... No way in heck I'm dailying my 200 and it sips regular gas with slightly better efficiency with markedly more power than the premium guzzling 2uzfe.

Everything is a long drive and in LA it's light to light. Fwys stop & go.

Yes it is my daily driver. And like others have said... Awesome vehicle all around just a bit thirsty but if you can afford it. Do it.

Daily driver here. My normal commute is about 15 miles a day. Every so often I have to do the trek into the bay area in it for about a 130 mile round trip. At least I'm comfortable in the 100.

Gas can get expensive, but it's my hobby too so it's like owning a boat or a hot rod; it's not about the money. And I sure the hell ain't gonna drive a Prius.

Mine was my DD for many years, but it is now in semi retirement from that job. I probably use it to DD maybe once a week, with 135k on it I want to save it for ore exciting trips. The DD for the last few years have been more "fun" cars to drive around town, first was the 335i, then the modified R32, the more modified STI and now the only slightly modified GTR.
Other than wear and tear on the truck , as well the cost of gas the 100 is a great DD

Hello,
How apropos as this is a subject that has given me great pause. Needless to say, there are some great responses on this thread.
To add, I truly believe these trucks are magic.

The gas mileage is patently absurd.
Especially the 4sp (1998-2002's) add insult to injury

Even when self wrenching, the running costs are high. Simply, a vehicle built for I believe a 25 year service life is invariably going to use almost cost no object parts to facilitate this.

These trucks are pretty bloody slow compared to even a Hyundai Accent.

To me, none of this matters. In return for these tradeoffs you are riding in a vehicle whose safety is absolute. This clearly manifests when conditions are their worst. If I am ever lucky enough to have children, I cannot fathom a safer vehicle to drive on these often crazy roads.
I am also fortunate enough to live adjacent to trails that allow exploration and adventure. In this respect, these trucks are simply awesome.
Best,
J

I was trading off between this and a BMW Z4 as my DD. More 100 in the winter and more BMW in the summer, but I always drove both at last once a week.

I realized I enjoyed driving the 100 series more than the BMW, so the BMW is up for sale and I bought a 40 that I am building to be exactly what I always wanted with my last two 40's

So now the 100 series is my daily driver with an occasional 40 drive to work

any one want a 2009 BMW Z4?

I DD mine, and this weekend I took mine fully loaded down with camping gear for 6 people and pulled a trailer with 2 dirtbikes, fire wood, coolers, gas, and tons of other stuff over a couple mountain passes and lots of off pavement driving at low speeds and still got 13.95 miles per gallon. Ironically, it's actually basically the same I get in town driving unloaded by myself, so I'd say while the mpgs aren't great compared with a new "normal" car, there are very few things that can compare in versatility, comfort, safety and capability.

Is it a manual? I am now in the process of adding a second vehicle mostly to have a manual transmission. If my LX was so equipped it be literally perfect...
That and it would be a blast to head to Colorado in the Summer. (far and away my favorite time to be there)
