I run Westach gauges cause they look like they fit. No LED crap, round analog. Good price,
hand made when you order.

I really like them too. Not sure I agree with 'good price' with some of their products though, haha. But I suppose at least you get what you pay for with those.

Well I really tried not to point out the obvious crap welds but since you did. You are SOooo good at everything else you do, why the lack of welding skills? Must be your welder right?
Usually? Lack of patience, shaky hands and only doing it once a year for a few minutes. And in this case with stainless, no scrap to practice on.

And of course I never grind any welds.

With the manifold I actually managed some pretty welds, but naturally they were on the bottom where they'll never be seen.

I wouldn't use stainless again, man it warps. Just happened to have all the fittings for free.

Yeah the 2" dual gauge would be perfect, but their prices are out to lunch on it...the 3" version is more reasonable but just too big. Beautiful gauges but
I really don't like having extra gauges on the dash.
All gets too fast furious and lame.
Plan to hide the pyro with just a visible warning light, and I'm undecided if I even want the boost visible.

I have just one gauge, its a dual EGT/Boost from Westech. Small, subtle, no bling. Two in one. This isn't the exact one, but something along these lines. But yeah, I get the desire to not have anything. I shudder every time I think of a-pillar gauge pods I see on Alberta lifted diesels, lol.

Also, almost forgot, there's a tangible reason aside from my ineptitude...

The gas I'm using isn't the best for ss. The welds don't come out that pretty yellow colour like they do with the right gas, and they don't flow out as well either unless you use extra heat.
And with the way stainless warps so savagely, I was really trying to avoid extra heat.

I'm sure I'll remember all these lessons when I weld stainless again in 10 years 🤣

Did a couple hot laps on the side road, then said ****it, I'm thirsty.

Made it to the beer store and back without barfing out all it's oil or catching fire, so I'm calling that a tentative win. :grinpimp:

I'm sure I'll have a few leaks to chase down.

I'd forgotten how much smoother they run with a turbo. The manifold tick being gone probably helps too.

Did the quick and dirty boost gauge install so I had some idea of what was going on. That brass circle is hiding a hideous hole the po cut for a tach.

i like this old boost gauge. It's appropriately beat to s***.

Sure does whistle, maxes out at about 6 psi, so I guess I was pretty close on the wastegate. Or it's running out of fuel, either way, I won't mess with the fuel till the pyro shows up next week.

If you were closer, and I was on the same side of the pond, I'd loan you my Argon tank. 🤷‍♂️

I've got a lifetime supply of it that I'll eventually get through. In the meantime I tank of mystery gas I got from Bradford that makes nicer looking welds than pure argon.

Thanks but I'm done with stainless. I put the regular mig wire back in the machine and instantly smooth as a gravy sandwich.

I should have just done that off the bat and not worried about the carpet matching the drapes, **** of a lot smoother welds without that s*** stainless wire.

At the hospital, the miller welder with stainless would lay some super nice beads. So I'd say blame the equipment... ;)
I'm sure your weld's would look better if you had Island Health's equipment budget.

They actually look less s***ty in person, the camera really does make them pop

I could have polished them smooth , but I hate grinding, and unless you're climbing in the engine bay they'll never be seen again, so my give a s*** faded rather quickly...

Funny, at work I'm generally welding fancy 100k operating room equipement back together at 2am with a ****ing stick welder.... because the boss won't pay to get the argon bottle filled so I can practice tig welding.

Don't mind the holes blown through it doc, that's as good as it gets.

Ryan I have a Tig at my place if you need anything done in the future.

Oh sure, now you tell me

Honestly, I don't think I'm zen enough for Tig.
I'd run out of patience or attention span and go back to my trusty high speed bird s*** shooter :hillbilly:
Uh, ya, sorry. Just so you know in the future though. Will always weld for cider if anyone else needs anything.

Cider you say.... :hmm:

It would take a LOT of cider to get someone to spend all that time zapping a manifold together

we'll see how our trees do this year, we didn't do an apple cider last year, but we've been getting persecco made from the grapes the past couple years.

That turns out really well. McBarley's stuff is always good.

If we get a s***load of apples I'll drop you a line ...

We made 55 gallons of hard cider one year. It was a very foggy year.

ye Olde boost gauge installed. Already looks like it's been there 30 years:lol:
Kindof a pain in the ass because the duct is right behind there, but I didn't make the hole. :meh:

Plan is, make that radio drawer a flip down cover and hide the pyro behind it. Once I have the alarm point set I don't need to see it all the time. It'll look like Ben Hur's wrist watch as it is.

The other thing I want to do before getting to keen on fuel etc is the timing.

Looking at this, appears to me someone has advanced it in the past. That nut ain't virginal.

At least I'm pretty sure that's the advance direction. Time to dig out the book. :hmm:
PXL_20230621_180403158.jpg

Well, I know I said I wasn't going to mess with the fuel but...I did.

Just a half turn, but damn, that's more like it. Tightened up the wastegate arm a bunch and got a touch of 8psi when I floored it, so it's getting there.

That's as far as I'll go till I know temps.

Now to continue shop cleaning. It's like someone used a s***load of tools and didn't put them away.

Also hoping I find the wormhole my chuck key for the drill press fell into. Seriously. Dropped it, hit floor, bounced and phased out of existence. I've swept the whole area. Ain't there.😒
