CV/front axle "trail" spare components

They might be directional seals, and in one the CV is turning clockwise, the other CCW. Plus they go into the sides of the front diff and between the main housing and extension housing it is asymetrical, so even the mounting for them could be different.

Your second image shows the numbers I get for them. I wouldn't trust that description saying both left and right.

Might want to pull the fill plug just to be sure . . .
Thanks for the reminder, I did find the time to pull the fill plug and top off probably one or two ounces fluid today, just to be sure.

Did you guys reuse the adjusting lock cap and axle hub grease cap? Seems like there are several small parts in this diagram that the FSM shows as non-reusable but from digging around online, most people reuse these things.

Yes, they are reusable. Just don't mangle the dust cap removing it. Cotter pin is good for a 2nd run, but it's worth keeping an assortment with you.

For future reference, the cotter pin part number looks like it is 95381-04045. It's just a cotter pin though, so of course anything generic would likely be fine.

Does anyone know the rough dimensions of the cotter pin, I need to grab 2 just in case before I pull my axles. I might get away with reusing the old ones, but want something on hand in case I can't reuse them.

Grabbed an assortment:

Closest size in the kit is 5/32"x1-1/2". The oem is probably some metric size, but the dealer doesn't stock them, so I grabbed a generic selection from the local auto parts store.

Hi mud, I'm going to replace driver side cv axel (43430-60071) but I'm stuck on choosing seal
which one is correct and what is the difference?

90311-47012
90311-47027

Should I consider replacing something else? Like hub seal 90304-94001 ?

Those part numbers are for the seal that goes in the ends of the front differential. Toyota specified different part numbers for the right and left side of the vehicle. -47012 is for the left side, but this number was superseded in the toyota parts system by -47027, so they are basically the same part. Most likely if you try to order a -47012 it'll be replaced by 027.

Yes I'd put a hub seal in there, since the moving surface on the CV that it touches will be fresh, it's best to get a new rubber seal in there. Plus you'll have it all the way apart making that seal very easy to install. That part number is the same for both sides.

2013 LX, Also will be replacing the CV axle as it’s been flinging grease everywhere. In the parts diagram someone posted here it shows a seal “90316-83001”, do I actually need this? Can’t seem to figure what it’s even for?

I have also noticed a very very small amount of oil accumulating on the head of the lowest bolt just under where the axle meets the diff. Doesn’t seem like engine oil so I’m guessing it’s gear oil, also smells pretty bad. Will replacing the diff seal hopefully remedy this?

What I’ve got on my list for the Front RH side is.
Axle: 43430-60071
Diff seal: 90311-47013
Hub seal: 90304-94001
Quart of Mobil 1 diff oil LS 75w-90

Anything else I’m missing? Do I actually need that other seal?

This is good info for @Vasiliy too. I was mistaken earlier.

The 90304-94001 is a “dust seal” that should come installed on the CV. It is just a metal guard that keeps sticks and things from getting to the rubber hub seal. It shows as being on the CV axle assembly already.

What I was thinking of earlier in the conversation with vasiliy as the hub seal is your 90316-83001 seal. That one goes in the back of the knuckle and seals against the outer CV joint.

Ah ok gotcha, thank you. So do actually get 90316-83001, but not 90304-94001

@Oogabooga and @Vasiliy sorry but I remembered yet another part.

There is an o-ring between the hub bearing and the knuckle, it can maybe be reused but it's cheap and since you're in there, might as well do it. 90301-99182

I just received my cv axel. it arrived with a little damaged on the seal (see photos)

How bad is it? Can it be bent back and with some sealant maybe? or replace with a new one, according to FSM, some special SST may be needed to press new seal

I think you’ll have trouble getting that truly round again, and it fits in a pretty close tolerance to the back of the knuckle.

I’d personally have a go at getting a new dust seal and installing it. Even if I had to fabricate the tool out of plywood or something..

Even if you order another axle the odds are it’ll be messed up too.

Can’t make it up, just got my new CV axle today and sure enough my seal is all messed up too, looks pretty bad. The box it came in was falling apart.

@bloc So what you’re saying is don’t even bother trying to bend it back? Guess I’ll have to try and look into how to get a new seal on it.

Just got mine from Serra Toyota. Looks similar. Bought 2 axles, both messed up. #%&$

@Oogabooga, how did you fix yours? I’m going to call Serra tomorrow and get new seals. I doubt they will want me to ship them back.

I bought a cv a 2 years ago during one of these sales and never opened the box… I know I should but I almost don’t want to find out.

Obviously, you probably ought to look so you are not in a jam when/if you go to install it. I called Serra and they told me to file a damage claim with UPS and they sent me a return label. I thought they would want to just send me new dust covers and seals but the parts guy said, those parts are not sold separately. I haven't checked that, but that is hard to believe. Just looking at these, it doesn't take much to damage the duct covers. Just setting it down hard on a bench could dent them as their diameter is the largest thing on the assembly. These have to get messed up all the time. IMO, its the packaging in the OEM box is lacking. Lots of bubble wrap but what they need is a collar of some kind so that the dust cover can't hit whatever surface it is set on. I suspect that in my case, these were already damaged when they were taken off the shelf put in the big box UPS delivered. We'll see how this claim thing goes. At least my cruiser isn't down and in need of the CV assembly to get up and running again.

Just checked mine and can confirm that the packaging is kinda lame. All my bubble wrap was around the axle tube and not the joints. My box appears to have had some type of impact on the center section so the bubble wrap did serve a purpose.

Mine was almost perfect except for 2 flat spots on the dust shield. I was able to bend them out and it appears to be fine. Hopefully I never have to use this thing.

Annoying to say the least and I wish I had inspected it upon delivery.

FWIW it was from Serra 2 years ago.
