So I found some factory 4.88's that we are putting on my son's truck cause he is running 33" tires. We also installed a 1" ball joint spacer. While pulling out the front diff, we noticed the outer boot is torn on the driver's side and the passenger side is tearing also. Is their a way to change out the boots from the "inside" now that the diff is out? I did the search but am still not sure if it can be done or not?

Thanks in Adavance,
ML

I've rebooted these CV shafts, Toyota sells a kit with new boots, bands and grease. It's a very messy job. You'll need a pair of band pliers, although you can do it with nipper pliers.

You might be better off finding someone that is doing a SAS and get their axles.

Thanks KLF, i bought the boot kits from Sam Stewart and yes, after reading through the posts, it looks like a pain to do these.

Lots of blue towels, rubber gloves, and a big sheet of cardboard that you can easily fold up and throw away. It will look like a crime scene when you are done.

I agree with KLF, I did both sides of my 89

Really can't say about changing the boots but a slick trick to make later removal of shafts a sinch. Is remove the studs from the dif flange and replace them with grade 10 bolts. You can then easily remove the shaft without having to pull balljoints. I got were I could swap out shafts in 20-30 minutes.

Question, we removed the differential cause found some 4-runner 4.88 gears. Is there a way to remove the axles from the "inside" without having to mess with the hubs, rotors, etc.

Thanks,
Ml

I don't see how without removing the CV's.

You could remove the front hubs to get to the big nut that connects the CV to the spindle/rotor. You could then pull the shaft through the area where your differential was.

Got it.

Thanks Kris!
