I have rebooted and my passenger side boot has a small spot where the rubber lip is missing so when I tighten the clamp it slips off:mad:

Anybody have a fix for an other wise new boot? Can't figure out how to tighten it without it slipping off.

I did but I have no more real estate before I get to the first raised rib and then I get into flex issues and it popping off. I took a crimper and tried to turn up a new lip on it. If that doesn't work I may be forced to reboot.

That is a very interesting alternative. Will definitely explore that. Have you used it in any application?

I've used safety wire in a number of applications but never a CV boot. If I were you I'd give it a try before pulling the entire CV apart...you don't have anything to lose. Don't get the wire too tight otherwise it might cut through the boot...

Roger that....will give it a go if the current jerry rig doesn't work.

I think i've pumped 4 gallons of lube into that one boot to keep the cv joint from drying up!!!

Also you could try cleaning the boot and clamp with denatured alcohol or similar to help the rubber "grab". I would imagine once it's tight grease would have a hard time migrating between the boot and clamp.

?

Ok so here was the decided fix. Do ya'll see any reasons why it won't work or will harm anything?

I cleaned (denatured alcohol) the boot and clamp from Pfran and couldn't get enough grip to keep the clamp from just slipping off the end of the boot due to the lip being torn that normally seats it.

I looked into safety wire but just didn't feel I could get it tight enough and wanted to try the attached before going that route as I think to hold it would most likely cut the soft rubber.

so, what I did was tighten a clamp on the boot until the point where it normally slips off upon further tightening, then I put a second clamp in board of the boot against the metal shaft. I got it TIGHT and when I then went back to the boot clamp to tighten it it snugged up nicely because instead of sliding off the end it ran into the secondary clamp and the 2 clamps pinched the boot lip between them.

Time will tell if it works but thought I would post up my idiot move ruining that rubber lip and how I fixed it.

also the idea of moving the clamp further out on the boot doesn't work because you need all that slack to turn sharply or to drop a tire down or up off roading.

I have a cv boot leaking too and will be reclamping it soon. Did you ever think of trying some sort of worm clamp with teeth? In other words, something that has sharp but very shallow barbs that would claw and grip the rubber boot without going all the way through?

In theory seems like a good idea, but my hunch is that putting barbs on the clamp would be counter productive. The centripetal forces on those clamps are pretty great, and shredding a cv boot would seem imminent in that scenario.

You're probably right. If this fix doesn't work for him, he may just be better off with a new boot altogether.

I doubt that the weight of both tensioners being on the same side is a big but you may want to place them opposite each other. In other words, rotate the outer one a half turn.

The ones I'm using are from Pfran and have some "teeth" to them to grab the rubber but they aren't sharp per say. I used Pfran as a source because his have rounded outer edges (I used non rounded edge ones which is what started this whole shananigans)
I think any more "edge" and as stated here, it would cut the rubber and generate more harm than good.

http://www.pfranleds.com/cv-clamp-kit-10-piece/ plug for Pfran and see attached images...work great.

I have felt no negative effects through the drivetrain or steering but will definitely do this when I reinspect it this weekend....thanks for the suggestion.

I started this thread rather sheepishly but maybe it will help someone else out .

Roger, thanks./////they do have smoothed edges for this application though. see above post about vendor Pfran.
