I don't remember any awards handed out at the end of a trail for beauty. :D

That's just cos you're never in the running.

I'm doing 2"x3"x.250" rectangle runners with 2"x.120" round real close in. Haven't worked out the brackets yet. The runners will be angled to aid in sliding off of stuff.
All this is waiting on redoing my exhaust, tho.

i used square stock for the main rail, using george's design, and later added round tubing for outer rub bars. I love mine.

Actually think I'll copy your design Concrete. Doesn't look so difficult to get that kick out when made in two pieces.

Yes, I like the bump (kick out) at the back door. It looks like a sweet design!!

I am getting cleaned up to head out to the Friday night meet! Got the wife and the kid all ready!

I will be bringin a camera - so lots of slider ideas will be 'shot'!

To the people who made your own, how much in materials did you spend and how long in labor hours?

Heh, then you'll see just how many CSC'ers actually have sliders. :D

I checked material cost for

136" of 2x4
3' of plate
160" of 1 1/4" round pipe
and about 48" of 1x2

equals about $170 here in Opelika

Go Square! Make them look like the Slee or Metal tech sliders. Both are good looking and Strong.

I do like the look of the square tubing. That's why I wanted to ask before going that route. Hate to put all this time into it when I went a direction that wasn't sensible!

I think that the main thing is going to be:

A) Finding the best materials (not like going to your local grocery store!)

B) Laying out the design principle (Gotta have somewhere to begin without hacking up the 80!)

C) Practicing my stick welding abilities. Gonna have to get out the ol' Lincoln 'Tombstone' welder and dust it off!

I will post up some progress once I get materials. It may be a couple weeks. Trying to get bills caught up from the recent move! :(

Davis Salvage on ~ 34th Street and Washington sells to the public at good prices- usually cheaper than anyone else that sells to the public. They sell both used and new metal. They have yards on both sides of Washington, most of the new steel stock is at the north yard. Oddities and wrought-iron fencing stuff is at the south yard.

Fantastic Spike! I greatly appreciate the local referral!

I will get down there and do some 'window shopping'! I work down off 12th ST & Indian School, so that sounds like a good lunch break distraction!

My favorite is Metal Supermarket in Tempe. They are a little more expensive than Davis, but for the most part no cut fees, they cut everything with a band saw, so it works out in the end and good guys to deal with.

Today I stopped by Davis Salvage. I found some 1 3/4" x 1 3/4" w/ a 1/8" wall. They want $3 a foot and $2 a cut for it.

Would this stuff suit a Cruiser slider? I want something that will hold back the rocks - and something I would be able to use the Hi-Lift jack on. Hence, one of the reasons to use square and not just round!

What is some of the stuff you guys running square tubing? is this way to big? Your experience would be greatly appreciated!

def. not too big, maybe too small. I think I have read that people on here have used 1/8 - mine are made out of 1.5 X 2.5 X 3/16 tubing. I wanted 2x3 but had to take what the yard had since I was in a hurry. I don't remember how much it was per foot but my total bill from the steel yard was $82, so I am out around $120 for mine including welding rods, bolts, paint, etc.

Well, if your @ 1.5 x 2.5 x 3/16 - then I am not too far down with the 1.75 x 1.75 x 1/8. I just don't want to much added weight, without sacrificing protection capabilities!

John

1/8" is fine, no worries.

but by adding heavy sliders, you are actually lowering the center of gravity of the vehicle ;)

Most of the guys who I've seen build sliders use 3/16" wall, and it holds up well- never seen it dent. I use .250" 'cause that's how I roll. :D

I must have a really low center of gravity then. Mine weigh in at over 50lbs ea.
