Custom Mounting for Cobra 75 WX ST (1 Viewer)

There was a thread entitled CB INSTALL EXAMPLE awhile back in which CDAN and NAKMAN mentioned that they are running these CB's and had some custom locations where it was installed.

Does anyone else run one of these CB's? Where do you have it?

CDAN and NAKMAN--Could you post pictures of where yours is installed and maybe a little bit on the install process. I mainly interested in how you were able to find space for the box and still have enough slack to manipulate that tiny cord, and how you keep the connector from falling back in. Is there an extension available?

The PO of my truck apparently had the same set-up, as I found the box still inside. I got lucky today and found a guy locally that had a used one I picked up for $35. Figured it was too good to pass up, and I'm stoked that I don't have to tear into the dash tonight. Thanks for your help.

I do not yet own a digital camera, it seems that all my money went into the Cruiser.

I do indeed have one of the very same units you describe. In leu of photos I will try to describe my layout:

I mounted the "silver box" to the vertical instrument panel brace that is just to the right of the gas pedal. I then ran the mic cable under the center console and brought it out by the front of the E-brake handle. I have a mic mount clip on the side of the rear console just in front of the rear cup holder.
I have a Wilson 5 foot fiberglass antenna mounted to my Slee tire carrier. I was able to obtain an SWR match of just barely above 1:1 (almost as good as it gets) with this set-up.

Beo will be over to the house on Sunday for a secret project and I bet he will bring his camera with him. I will get him to take a couple photos of my set-up then.
In this case, the "bulkhead" that would mount the connector between the mic cable and the box was not used. The connection is "burried" under the front console.

I understood most of it, pics will be nice, but how did you get the mic cable from the verticle instrument panel brace to the side of the center console next tot he e-brake? My mic cable is only like 4 inches long. I currently have the box shoved under the drivers foot heater vent and the mic cable comes out between the brace and the center console. No idea were I want to mount the mic.

I bought a Wilson 1000 roof mount with the wire big wire whip and "filled" the whole left in the roof by the PO. Testing will happen Saturday on a club run.

I have the same radio (and a somewhat bodged together mount) - it sounds like your mike cable may have been modified (the coiled on - correct?). Mine is something like 3' coiled.

No, the mic cable I'm talking about is the one little stub that comes out of the Silver box....where you plug the CB into. Where did you mount the box and how do you have the mic cable for easy access and custom look? Thanks

My connector is under the console so it is not a "quick disconnect" like the design allows for. I thought that the coiled mic cord was quite long anyway. I have some of the mic cord stretched out under the console and it comes out the rear edge of the front console. There is still plenty of cord to use the mic easily. I will get Beo to take a couple pics on Sunday when he comes over.

Ok, I think I can see it now. So you never take it out. Yeah, one of the cool things about it, I thought would be the fact that you could take it out and keep it from getting stolen, or transfer it between vehicles. Thanks

Correct, it is not quickly removable in this configuration. I have an old Midland in my truck that has been hot-rodded a bit so I don't need to swap back and forth. If I wanted to remove the mic it would take about 5 minutes to do it. 2 screws on the DS of the front console, lift it up a bit, unscrew connector and pull out cord.

Thanks Dan and Christo...Nice mount BTW, I think I'm going to try for something like that. Still don't know exactly where I'll stuff that box, but I'll find somewhere. Does anyone know if NAKMAN did the same thing as Dan did by stretching the cord? Thanks.

my box is under the dash and I just run the mike along the console. It sits under the parking brake unless I'm actually using it - Do people still steal CBs ?

So Safado, how did you end up mounting your Cobra 75WX unit?

I'd like to be able to quickly pull out the mic. I wonder if Chirsto's mounting allows for that (it would seem so).

I guess another advantage of Dan's mounting configuration is that the mic cable is well out of the way of his big feet. I don't like the idea of the cable getting tangled up in my shoes ect...

Anybody have any other good ideas for mounting the Cobra 75? What about the Pas side?

I mounted the power supply/antenna connection box under the center console. The connector for the mic unit extends out from under the console box on the drivers side. When connected but not in use the mic sits on the floor underneath the console side mounted cup holder. It is out of the way but in easy hand reach of driver.

Thanks Rich. By the console, do you mean under the compartment of where the xfer and tranny shifters are? (as opposed to where the storage thingy is)

Also did you cut the console plastic to get the mic connector access?

How does the console lift up? do you recall where the mounting bolts are?

I mounted it under the center console that is between the seats. Remove 4 screws from the shifter console. To remove the shifter console you then need to remove transfer case knob (or pop skirt free from shifter console). The transmission shifter needs to be not in park, and there is a connector to the 2nd Start switch that needs to be removed. To lift console over end of tranny shifter you need to push in the shift button. To remove the center console there are 3 screws , 1 under mat in open forward compartment, 2 inside storage area under arm rest.

There is enough room under the console in one location to mount the box. No need to cut any plastic to run any of the wiring - power, mic, or antenna.

The floor under the console gets hot, so I mounted the box on a piece of lexan, and then, using heavy duty outdoor rated double sided tape, fastened a section of thick, closed cell foam between the floor and the lexan. So, top to bottom, is the box, lexan, double sided tape, foam, doublesided tape, floor. Once the console is back in place the box is trapped and is not going anywhere. The box should be grounded, so with the foam sandwich it is necessary to run a seperate ground wire. There is an exposed grounding screw under the console that suits this purpose to ground the box case and also provide the power ground.

I've done a number of hot weather desert trips with full loads up steep mountain roads, meaning max underfloor heat, and the equipment has survived. I don't know that it is necessary to keep the box off the floor due to the heat, but used the foam to do so as a precaution.

When the mic is stowed it is laying on the floor underneath the cup holder that is next to the drivers seat behind the hand brake. It is pretty much out of sight and out of the way, but easily reached while driving without taking eyes off of the road. If you feel the need to hang the mic from a clip I suppose you could mount one on the console. If you disconnect the mic from the box, the remaing short pigtail can be tucked under the console totally out of sight. I don't usually bother to disconnect the mic. I rides just fine on the floor. To see if it will work for you just lay the mic on the floor and run the end of the cord under the console. You will immediately see how it works and if the mic on the floor will be a problem for you or your rear seat passengers.
