First off: if you've never ridden the train from Chama to Antonito, you should be ashamed. It's amazing, but especially in the fall. The Aspens are amazing.

Here's some pics. I have more, but I sent them to TT, so hopefully something might be published there.

I didn't find anything remotely approaching hardcore, or even moderate (not even as hard as Cedro Peak), but there are a few marked 4x4 roads that I didn't take in the area. Either way, it's a wicked fun drive up there. It's really fun to follow the train and stuff. I'll try to do it again next fall, if anyone wants to join then.

Steve: I'll get you maps as soon as I scan them in.

Great pics Dan. Keep me on your list of folks who are interested in going with you next year.

Very cool! Beautiful fall colors.

nice, very nice. I must explore this area.

completely unrelated but:

Dan when do you plan to go backpacking next? My brother hooked me up with a sweet 4 season tent that I need to break in. Cumbres looks like the perfect place.

Hmm, since I'll be unemployed and I have an old backpack setup....

I'm waiting for my November schedule to be published (should be on the 19th), but I'm thinking of doing a short trip sometime in there. Maybe Wheeler Peak or Elwood Pass-Quartz Lake (in the South San Juan Wilderness). We shall see...

It'll also depend on if I can get enough time off to swap the 3B into Dad's 40.

What kind of tent is it? I've got a two (three in a pinch) person Moss that can withstand an avalanche, even if it does weigh 10 pounds.

Wheeler Peak via Bull of the Woods is nice.

He got me the REI Arete ASL tent. REI Arete ASL 2 Tent at REI.com
I have it set up in the living room right now :D

Did you sleep in it too :hillbilly: ? After you get some nights in the tent let me know how it works out. I bought a few REI brand name things and they have not worked out for me (e.g. hiking boots only maybe 3 months) and they are torn apart.

Some of the REI brand stuff is awesome. Some is rebadged from other manufacturers. I have some REI boots that are really Raichle boots that I have had since 1999 or so, and have a few thousand miles on them, from Nepal, to Alaska, to Patagonia, to Colorado and New Mexico..... Good stuff.

Rory: why is it in the living room? Are you afraid it might get wet? :flipoff2:

Schedule should be out soon, then we can look at some time to get out.

For sure I'll be back around the C&TS next fall. I'm going to try to give myself two days to explore more then. There's serious potential in some of those trails for something more difficult, and getting around to some other awesome photo spots.
