Why did you pull the diff? Did you hear this thing banging around in there?
I noticed an odd series of indentations on the diff cover. Also saw some metal when I drained the axle oil. The two together had me calling shenanigans and convinced me to open it up...

Not sure I would be worried about the housing as much as the ring gear. I have 40 stripped housing just being used as a weight to hold a tarp down, but don't think yours looks that bad and the 40 won't have the tabs for the swaybar. Also have a early FF minus the diff. The semi floater is your for free if you want it.

Surprisingly the ring gear does not look all that bad. I was thinking to get Zuk to look at it for a 2nd opinion...

I plan to just grind down the indentations on the diff cover. No other real damage that I could see that would warrant swapping the housing. What was interesting was how hard it was to pull out the birfs. Has to use a bolt and slide hammer to get them past the trunnions.

There was a also a fair amount of metal floating around in there... Figured I should change all the bearings at a minimum.

Any other suggestions?

Good idea on replacing the all bearings as long got it apart. I'm sure Zuk will tell you if there is any damage in the diff. Would inspect the axle shafts for any damage from loose parts floating around in there. Also inspect the splines for wear as well.

Since it is apart I would do the all seals too. Perhaps you can swab the axle housing tubes as well to remove any metal that may have moved into those areas.

Not sure if that little bit of metal shavings would be an issue, best to ask ZUK. Have you found the nut yet???

Any old school guys remember the flumes and the original water slide out by Lake Pleasant?

That is AWESOME! No way would today's safety conscious crowd permit such a thing. Too bad, that would have been a ton of fun!

Also getting to experience the 'fun' that it seems others have also enjoyed... All summed up in one photo. Anyone know what this is?

Bolt that failed the QA test

Broken bolt:doh:
Its a broken Differential Shaft Pin.

AKA the pin that holds together the rear differential and prevents you from accessing the c-clips to remove the rear axles.

Time to get creative. Thank goodness for the forum and the pioneers that have been there, done that, bought the t-shirt.

I ruined many a pair of cut off shorts at the Flumes and riding over the falls. Great fun. Like the cliff diving back in the day at the Salt.

12 & 13 are needed front and rear. The bolt holds the shaft the spider gear rides on. 14 Is the block the keeps the axles with C clips in the groove in the side gear.

popped many a flip flop walking the trailt to the cliffs carrying a cooler! good stuff....

One of my techs made this for his man cave. The parts are all clear coated and the glass top spins ~ I like it!
