"normal" is what I thought was needed, safety concern. But the bigger Safety issue is probably avoiding the onlookers, they cross the centerline and cut me off in traffic, staring and yelling "what's that". I thought it was getting more frequent in my ole '62, and I can't imagine how tough it must get in a '75, you would definitely need a bull bar with a cattle prod, front and rear.
 
nah, just add "red cross" to the side.
or
if a pickup then add 4 cord of wood in the back ...

I'm fortunate to have been able to avoid going to the "shop" with vehicles for a long time, with the exception of tires. I wasn't familiar with diesels when I got this 70, but as I work through baselining and cleaning this one up, my impression is that it's simpler and more forgiving than a gasoline powered truck. I wish I had gone to diesel sooner. When the 3fe in my '62 ever dies, I won't hesitate to put a diesel in there too.
 
starter dilemma

the starter I took out and the one I bought to replace it are different.
parts guy say's the right one is not available in America.
questions are:
should I hunt around for a contraband replacement?
or, should I try to fit the big replacement in there?

this all started because the plunger got lazy, and when I couldn't find a plunger kit readily, I went for the reman. And, as it happens that I refuse to learn, I didn't take it out before I ordered the replacement. So, guess it's me with the lazy problem, not the old starter. and, these things are a wee bit too heavy to push and run, jump in and start.
 
Got past the starter issues with new contacts and chuck. It looks like there may be other parts available from the fork lift shops. So I now have an unused reman starter available. Don't know what it might belong in, but it's not right for the 2lt.

if the part number is still readable, post it up off the new starter and we can cross reference.

fresh in the T box. Came from a reputable source, but I provided the part #, which came from a young Turk. I'm just an older fool who doesn't get the sight picture as clear as it once was. I compensate by throwing larger lead and more of it downrange, but that doesn't help in this situation.

on the red sticker on the side of the starter is there a *****-***** number?

Do you not have access to a good starter shop that can just rebuild your current unit?

I was able to revive the old starter with a few new parts. Now I'm trying to make the power steering pump on my daughter in law's '62 fix itself, and next up is the stuck accelerator cable on my son's '80, or maybe just go fishing...
