Hey guys, I've been wrenching on my cruiser myself for several years. I've got it in great condition now. Unfortunately I feel like I'm missing something. It runs rich and despite new o2 sensors I feel like it may be something in the cats, EGR, or charcoal who knows. I dont need emissions as I live in Rio Rancho. So it hasn't been tested in that manner.I think I may just need to take it to someone who has the expertise to point to the root of the problem.
Any recomendations on local shop that know these rigs and won't kill my bank account?

ToyoMasters, near Ellison and Jefferson. Chris did some good work on my 80.

Curious, how do you it's running rich? Unburned fuel smell?

I smelled fuel, until I changed out my 80's charcoal fuel vapor canister. That fixed that issue.

Purely speculative. Exhaust fumes are bad i guess more than being rich, idk. I checked the codes and had 02 sensor in it. Changed em both but still have code. Several battery disconnects and still there.
I'm not techy at all so electrical codes/diagnostics aren't my thing.

If it were obd2 it would make things easy. Like being able to read fuel trims.

Could try a band-aid and see what happens. Spark plug anti fouler extension on the O2 sensor.

Agreed, if it were OBD2, we can look into it live.

What CEL codes are we talking about here?

Ali, just saw this been a busy weekend. Ended up adding another GX to the fleet.
I am getting code 2-5 in the 94. Can't find my electronic FSM. Gonna do a quick search and see what I find.

So I did find a crack in the exhaust entering the muffler and another at a joint behind the muffler. These are downstream of my 02 sensors but could they cause the code?

Not really.

Welp, dangit. Thanks Pappy. I'll look into getting the muffler replaced and a new resonator anyway. I prefer the quiet stealth as opposed to loud drone.
I think what it actually is, is the wiring was damaged going to sensors.
Vaccum lines have all been replaced, injectors were sent off to get redone a few years ago. Motor has a little vibration from running lean I guess not rich. But doesn't spudder or stall out.

So I took the advice and went to ToyoMasters. They did a great job with diagnostics but unfortunately its bad news. I have low compression in 3rd cylinder. Stuck exhaust valve maybe. Looks like I will need to remove the head again. I will be needing a good machine shop for getting it straight. Or there may be some excellent parts for sale real soon on this board.

Bummer dude, but check out the "local services...." thread for engine rebuilders.

Yep total bummer. Used Knightons on rebuild (in thread you referred to) but they are out of business now. Kind of dated.

I've used Budlong motorsports and Edwards engines for each of my 80, back in the day. Not sure who the flavor of the month is nowadays!

Not Budlong. They would not be my first choice.

I'm going to recommend a shop. Automotive Machine Services, on Second Street. The building is old. It doesn't look like much, but the fellas inside are old school. They seem to specialize in old school engines. They did some work for me when I was at the garden on a Polaris engine, and I was pleased. I don't know how they would respond to a shim-valved engine.

Anderson Automotive might be another option just over on First Street. They might be more likely to deal with the valve shims.

I have not used these guys but have heard from a few people I respect that like them
