I have looked around the 60 Series posts all morning and found great info, now I'm looking for advice.

The truck is an 87 FJ60, in great shape. Here's the sequence of events.

- Lights left on, battery drained.
- The cables were crossed on a first attempt to jump the engine. (I didn't know this part). Engine starts, but will not idle.
- I came and pulled battery, dead on test, replaced battery.
- Engine cranks and starts, will not idle without accelerator being applied.
- I pulled the fusible link (looking for new one, left message for CDAN), which looks OK, but smells burnt.

- What WORKS - head lights, wipers, turn signals, starter.
- What DOES NOT WORK - tail lights, brakes lights, dash lights, radio, dome light.

Thoughts? Should I go ahead and pull the alternator and check it?

Any advice is appreciated.

Sounds like a fuse for the taillights, brake lights, etc... Not sure on the idling issue, sorry.

While the alternator might be hurt, it's not causing your idle and light problems.

My first guess for idle would be that the 'Emissions Control Computer' down inside the left front kick panel
has given up. It keeps the idle cut solenoid open- and it sounds like that's what's not happening.

But the missing lights... Have you looked at the fuses carefully? Some of your missing lights
have relays that actuate them, and if either the supply fuse or the supply for the relay goes,
they won't light.

Take a look at the wiring diagrams in the back of the FSM- they're a big help for things
like this where there may be one common failure in an unlikely place.

Check the engine fuse, in fuse panel to left of steering column - 10 amp.

Fusible link most probably fried. Replace and go from there. You can buy fusible link wire at most auto parts stores.

Thanks TobyB - I should have mentioned that I inspected every fuse in the fusebox, all were good visually. I have a Chiltons on order, needed to do that anyway. Will look into the idle solenoid, that make sense. I am mystified by the other lights. I'm wondering if any of the relays under the dash might be toast.

If you jumped from battery to battery, the only things that would have problems would be the jumper cables and the batteries. It is hard to overlook that big spark when you touch the clamp, so people do not tend to leave them connected the wrong way for long, unless they have never jump started before. Connecting a battery backwards is different. That can fry fusible links and alternator diodes.

Seen a bad fusable link give those same system's, certain stuff worked, certain stuff did not, it was on my 92 fj80 I think, replaced it, cured issues.

without looking at my fj60, I thought there were 2 parts to the link, but maybe not, also think they can be partially bad.

Hi, Jump around the fuseable link , it should idle. Then get more link wire ...it is not regular wire. Mike

There are actually 3 links- I'd bet one of yours has toasted. On my truck (86) the 3 links have connectors on each end, so replacing witht e factory part (if you can find it) is really easy.

It was the fusible link. Thanks to Onur at Lowe Toyota (478.971.3193). Great price and service. Installed and away we went.
