Guy's

Sorry for the cross thread here but I know some guys run 80 axels under buggies... Any help here would be awesome.

What is the consensus on the backing plate on an 80, needed or not needed. Right now I'm not running them, but after my rebuild, the pass side, the side I didn't have come apart at high speed is now acting funny. Now I should mention on the rebuild I did upgrade to DBA's both sides so the hubs have been off. At first I thought it was wheel bearing needing to be torque back down, but when I did that I still had the play. When I looked closer I found the spindle bolts were loose. A quick re-torque on those bad boys to the 34lbs, no shield and back together with no play...

Now the question, is that spacer really needed on the 80? I know mini truck guys need spacers cause the spindle is diff with a collar, but ours are flat... So if I have everything torqued down correctly this shouldn't walk back off again right???

Thanks,

-Ammo

I had a similar issue when I redid my front....I did run without the covers with no issues for a while, but decided to put them back on. I don't think you'll run into any issues. If it's a matter of the holes lining up (that was my issue) just file the holes and make them larger until it lines up and fits.

Thanks guys... I had some play on both sides after the rebuild. And after seeing my wheel fly past me at 75mph i'm a tad sensitive about any play in the front end. Turns out the pass side was the spindle bolts, drivers side was a re torque of the inner nut... Normal stuff. I think I spaced on the pass side assembly and forgot to torque them the 1st go around...

I'll just keep checking everything until it all settles in.

Thanks,

-Matt

Normal stuff?

There is nothing normal about loose spindle bolts...

Normal stuff = Worst nightmare.

Was talking about new bearings and re-torque the inner nut till it settles in... The spindle nuts were me spacing out and not setting torque the 1st go around... Already have the bolts replaced.

Have you used Landtank's torque method? I have a left side spindle that is not in the best shape and it has held the nuts fine using his torque technique.

Actually... they are needed. If you're running aftermarket rotors as was the Scallywag 80 when I got it with no dust shields, then the rotors may hit the caliper thus casuing vibrations and ruin the rotor... i had to find washers to align the caliper correctly...

Interesting. I haven't had that problem... The rotor sits perfectly in the center of my caliper. If you really wanted to, you could just cut up the shield like the mini truck guys used to do...

I'd have to agree with creeper, I haven't had any issues since I re torqued the spindle, and I've been checking them regularly. This is also after a good shake down run out to the coast, a play in the dunes and some local exploring in some trails. Everything is right how I left it, no spacers or dust shield needed.
