g'day punters; i am seeking a little information from you knowledgeable mudders regarding crankshafts and harmonic balancers.

my old 64 fj45 (project patina) is recieving a bit of love of late; i been actually considering starting a thread about her sometime. anyways we're in motor rebuild mode now and starting to turn our nose up a little at the crank; it needs an undersize and has suffered abuse where the h. bal. located. the h. bal. is also cracked at the crank points (from either wild eyed excessive cranking or more probably misuse during a reinstall) and needs replacing.

so i dug 2 old cranks from the very depths of my fathers junk shed and noticed they are different. one is cast 'TEQ' (on the counterweight) and has a smaller h. bal. keyway. the other (later?) is cast 'T' and with a larger h. bal. keyway. when the change? anyone know how to decode the other markings on the crank? am i right that fj25 have a very simple front pulley arrangement?

the motor i have pulled down has the 'T' cast crank and a block casting date from 1965. not necessary original crank though; this motor has been apart before.

also, anyone got hints for reinstall h. bal. apart from flog it on with a soft hammer?

thanks all

my damaged h. bal. has also been butchered to accept 3/8 unc threads at the puller holes. i did think perhaps it was a chev unit made to fit but i now think its a battered original. either ways i need to find a replacement from my wrecks and be nice to pull the correct unit w matching keyway straight up. thanks again.

Pullies

I had a look in the parts books and the 25 ,the two keys are the same PN. On the 40# the keys are different PN. The 40# the balincer PN changes at engine NO 243297 and again at 294920. The crank changes at 234344 and again at 294920 [oct 69]. The keys on the 40# change at Engine no294920.
Hope this helps.

thanks for that it does help. 294920 (oct 69 you say) seems to be the big change in crank, h.b. and key. my prefered parts motor (h.b. donor and perhaps crank) of 69 build so def be checking on that this weekend.

you mention the 2 keys being the same PN in fj25 i presume you mean h.b. key and timing gear key?

that changed after fj25?

the h.b. or crank pulley on my 25 bones a very simple affair compared to my 64. and im a couple thousand km from my 25 tray in sth aust to compare.

is my old TEQ crank fj25 specific? crank castings/stampings anyone?

my camshaft gear is steel; i was expecting a fibre gear? i need some decent literature perhaps

do we agree that these cranks (with keys, pulleys and gears to suit of course) are fully interchangeable between engine blocks until at least 1969?

appreciate all your input people.

It looks like the 25 crank has 2 squire keys and the 40 runs a squire key on the H.B. and half moon on gear. The cranks do have different P.N.The crank gear is the same P.N. on both. Cam gear changes at E.N.243297. HB is unike to 25. Hop this helps.

thanks ian - does help - starting to think my old crank i fj25 specific (also delving into my fathers memory) - i will post some pics of the casting marks, cranks and harmonic balancers but not for a week or so i away and busy -

and changing the subject a little - any ideas for a suitable wiper arm assembly to retrofit? always missing in my corner the globe due to constant semi desert thick scrub country

but im getting ahead of myself and thats an aside - mudder people please tell me your crank casting experience!

a 'week or so' has gone by so i'm back with that pic while im reviving a couple of threads.

bit of a repost; but this is the teq marking on the crank in my 25 tray
