I am half way through the TB replacement on my 99 LX since I couldn’t verify its last replacement and I’m sitting at 230k. I also had leaking power steering hoses but no exterior engine oil leaks. I was surprised to see this when I pulled off the lower TB/ cover. Something is or at least was leaking at some point and covered everything that wasn’t covered by the water pump. I’m going to clean that whole area and change out the crank seal anyway but wanted to see if this type of oil coverage is typical for an other leaks? Could this have been power steering leaking down the front and into the lower cover?

Taking picture after removing water pump. Makes for a difficult call, on where oil comes from. Since now entry area wet!
  1. I find tensioner pulley bolt leak, most times. This is, from not sealing bolt threads.
  2. Second leak most common, is weep from oil pump O-ring (top of oil pump, just below water pump). Normal not bad.
  3. Third is crank or cam seals, if they've been replaced. I've done more T-belt than I can remember in 98-05 2UZ. I've yet to find one, where factory installed crank or cam seals leaked.
I shoot pic of crank seal, tensioner female threads & O-ring pre water pump. I also look at bolt, washer and back of tension pulley.

O-ring has minor weep, not bad for 14 year 160K miles.

Crank seal is not leaking. Notice, seal is dry.

This spot pre cleaned/degreased. So difficult call on cam seal. But looks okay.
