crack in the head

so i have a 1974 fj40 and it turns out i have a crack in the head....
my mechanic tells me we can have it welded and rebuilt for around a thousand bucks.
is that a rip off,a good deal?
any advise on what you would do?
try to find a new head?
im not sure what is the best way to go.

I would look for a used head and get it rebuilt. You can probably even find a used stock engine and rebuild it yourself for less than $1000.

FWIW, I would have bought this in a heartbeat, if it wasn't just going to sit on the shelf as a backup ... And all my shelves are already full.
