hi, i have a couple questions. i am usually a search first advocate but i couldn't find anything. i am considering trading my 85 pick up for a 93 LC, locked and loaded. about 207k miles. what i can't seem to find out is, can you fit a 4x8 sheet of wood in the back? as far as 93-97 are there any year that seemed troublesome the others? i seem to read that the 80 series seems to have its fare share of troubles. are they prone to breaking down, or nickle and dimming me to death? head gaskets seem to be talked about which isn't an issue for me but what about other things, timing chains, water pumps, electrical issues, etc. does anybody have experiance with the 80 and say a 4runner. i've driven my fare share of cars and trucks but never a LC. sorry to ask such stupid questions and more will come as i remember them and respond to answers.
thank you

4x8 plywood will fit with the 2nd and 3rd row seats backs folded down (but not tumbled) and the tailgate up. It will stick out the back a little bit.

Why not 91-92?

1. No timing chain
2. No timing belt
3. No HG issue
4. No PHH
5. Less electronics to worry about
6. Same full coil-sprung suspension as the later models

You forgot to mention the other thing that a '91/'92 is lacking. ;)

Not with the hatch closed. What I do is what Doug said. I have a piece of foam pipe insulation that I slip over the lip of the lower tailgate. The plywood sits on that. If I need to bring home sheetrock I pick up a pair of 8' 2x4s and lay the rock on top of them.

The more people bash the 3FE, the more I laugh at them.

Awesome, thanks.

ok, if no timing chain and no timing belt then what, gears? also what is PHH.

this thread comes from me reading posts where people are saying that they spend thousands on keeping their LC running and i am asking myself what in the f$%k is wrong with these vehicles that you need to constantly fix them. i am trying to talk myself into trading my truck for an 80 and not regreting it.

Please remember that owning a LC is a lifestyle, not just transportation. We are a proud bunch and I think that if you look hard enough most vehicles this age and past ownership history will encounter some issues.

Most of what we post on here is due to:

- past owners not maintaining the LC properly (Maintenance)
- Repairs due to us actually DRIVING these trucks like they were intended.

If getting greasy and repairing your vehicle is not something you have time or patience for, look elsewhere.

No one is more on the fence about LC ownership than I am, going back and forth weekly. I have posted here about trading my 80 in on a Sequoia, Denali, etc. But it never fails, I'll be driving and someone will give me a thumbs up, or comment about the rig @ a gas station.

You are owning and driving a piece of history, each with its own set of personality quirks.

most repair shops do not get their hands on LCs very often so, al you have is us to help you (most of the time) - Oh and Cruiser Dan.

Also "PHH" = Pesky Heater Hose - a component of the cooling system that will require replacement once you base line the maintenance of your new rig. Neglect will cause the hose to fail and leave you will a huge coolant leak - usually in a place you would much rather have all the coolant you would need.

Hope this helps.

thanks. i have an 85 toyota pick up so getting dirty and greasy is not an issue for me. i often repair other coworkers cars for extra cash, i do all my own work even on my m3. thanks for the responses

Bingo. Gear-driven valve train = indestructible. It's a pushrod motor, so the camshaft is inside the block and driven directly by the crankshaft though gears.

PHH = Pesky Heater Hose. Do a quick search and learn much. :wrench:

BTW, the only thing I've done to keep this thing running is change the oil. That, and the few user-related errors that I've had to correct.

Just a quick comment- I'm not trying to deter you from buying what you want, just giving you more options.

Don't trade in your 85.

Get an 80 series in addition to it.
