Hey Guys,

I'm going to be moving to NYC (from Kansas!) in a little over a month. I have an 84 FJ60 with the head off at the moment and I've was contemplating whether or not to desmog it when it goes back together.

What are the emissions laws of NY/NYC like?

I need a new air rail for the smog system to go back fully functioning.

I'm probably not going to ultimately keep the truck in the city...it will probably wind up living with my girlfriend's dad upstate and be relegated to ski duty. Anyhow, emissions...give me a heads up please. And, I'll snoop around here more to learn about wheeling opportunities there. Should be exciting driving the old gal to NYC from Kansas loaded with all my worldly possessions....a good test of my headgasket replacement at the very least!

Thanks!

Nick

Honestly it depends on what part of the state you're moving to. Up near Albany ( upstate to some ) I asked my local shop about emissions for my 87, and they literally said "Emissions? What's that?" I took my truck to that same shop to remove my cat and replace it with a flowmaster.

On the other hand, downstate there are fairly strict emissions regulations as far as I know. I know for a fact that Mark Woytovich has to have his 85 smog tested.

Thanks for the reply....

I thought I read something that said once a car hits 26 model years of age, it is exempt? I can always keep it registered in Kansas a little longer b/c they don't care what you do. I'm going to be living on the upper east side of Manhattan, but the truck will likely spend a good deal of time in Rochester.

Whether or not I desmog may hinge on my ability to find the needed air rail....I'm in the middle of replacing my head b/c it cracked....badly. And my old air rail was about rusted thru and got mangled up getting pulled off of the cracked head.

Thanks!

Here's the cruiser in question...high centered on some deep ruts at the family farm.

Rochester?!?!? I live in Rochester 9 months out of the year, as I go to RIT.

As for emissions, like I said I'm pretty sure that upstate is exempt, but I don't know. Call a shop that is in Rochester to confirm whether or not you need emissions equipment.

Thanks for the replies. Staying stock will hinge on my ability to locate the air rail in a timely fashion then. I'm planning on moving/driving to NYC right before Christmas then driving the Cruiser to Rochester for Christmas.

I can just keep it registered in Kansas until I hit magic 26yrs either way.

A while back I was in Manhattan and saw a beautiful blue 60 when I was leaving the Patagonia store on the upper west side.....it was well timed as I was trying to explain to my girlfriend what my Land Cruiser was exactly.

I'm looking forward to Christmas in Rochester....I'm going to be skiing at Bristol Mountain as well? My first eastern skiing experience. This whole move is going to be vastly different from Kansas or Idaho.

You'll love the east coast skiing. :grinpimp: Anyone can look good in the west hero bumps. You'll actually need to tune your skis out here.

Well, I've got the air rail handled, should be here in a day or two from Idaho. Hopefully I can remember where everything goes and get it put together in the next week or so.

The air rail showed up, then I changed my mind and decided to go ahead and do the desmog. I can stay registered in Kansas for another year until the 26 yr magic exemption number comes to pass.

I got the truck put back together and running tonight. I am having some trouble getting it to idle correctly. It will just rev up and down over and over thru about 300-400 rpms....thinking I've got some sort of vacuum issue to sort out?

Definitely sounds like a vacuum leak. Hook up a vacuum gauge and see what it reads.

Got it running pretty well now. Still seems to have a little missing/hesitation in the 2600-3000rpm range. I drove it around all day today for the first time in months and it felt reeeally good. I want to get some mileage on it before I load my life into it and drive to NY in a week and a half!

I am planning on removing the cat later this week, and I was thinking of doing cap/rotor/wires to see if that helped with the misses, etc. I think I got all the vacuum lines dialed in per the Jim C. updated desmog schematic.

It sound like this chapter may have a couple new 60s heading your way!

I had a miss right around there when I finished my desmog so I changed my filters, cap and rotor and it runs perfectly now.

Have a good trip. GCLCNY is excellent!!

Made it!!!!

Did the trip from Lawrence, KS to Manhattan in 21hrs almost nonstop....I slept for an hour in the Cabela's parking lot in West Virginia. :) Otherwise, absolutely no problems at all. It was pretty bizarre driving it across Central Park considering it started it's life in Anchorage, and joined me in Idaho. I even found parking outside my door in NYC! I love driving a 25yr old truck, because no parking space is too tight! After I got moved into my place, I reloaded with the girlfriend and we headed up to Rochester another 6 hrs on the road for the holidays. I've been getting about 12.5 to 13 mpg.....still glad gas has been well under 2 bucks. With the desmog, my seat of the pants is indicating a good bit more on the top end now than previously. It was charging up the hills in PA and in the Catskills going up to Rochester.....also just had my first ever "Garbage Plate" for those in the know.

God damn I love garbage plates!!! They're a heart attack on a plate though.

I'm glad you made the trip up! If you need anything truck related while in Rochester, we've got a couple of guys up there with plenty of tools.

I hope we get this 3-6 inches of snow that is being predicted for Manhattan....because, I am going to go out and drive the cruiser around town and SMOKE taxis off the line at red lights! :D

Go find a parking lot and practice donuts. I'm going to go out tonight and see if I can get my 4wd donuts a little tighter :grinpimp:

next storm come out to Greenpoint and Maspeth, weekend snow storms make for lawless snow rally terror drives. wide streets no curbs no fire hydrents or cops;)

Just saying howdy to the GCLCNY gang. Coming up on the completion of my first year in NYC.

Also, just went out to my truck and saw a white 62 with Connecticut plates parked a few cars in front of me near 95th and Amsterdam. Thought I'd see if they were a mudder?

I swear I've been seeing tons of cruisers in Manhattan recently....mostly 80s and 62s. There's a nice looking white 80 near me with ARB bumper and lifted that is on street parked all the time too. And, I saw an LX450 with a bullbar and a MUD sticker in the window the other day near 87th and Broadway. There are probably 100s too, but I wouldn't notice them unless they've been SAS'ed or something.

I guess most Manhattan 'cruiser drivers aren't into manual transmissions. :hmm:
