That's my Pinzgauers passenger front outer axle housing. Not even top quality Austrian cast steel could hold up to top notch Austrian shenanigans!

Castings fail ugly - possible from the lack of a thread relief runout feature combined with a non-controlled root radius thread type from the looks of that pattern and what might be an initiation point - or maybe just plain old single cycle fatigue...

I think that means it's FUBAR :)
 
You know. In a pinch I could fix it good enough to make it work. And it really wasn't that difficult to replace. Very different than a cruiser but also very "field friendly".
