Hey folks...looking at a beautiful '99 LC in very good shape, with one drawback: owner broke keyless entry remote, thus I need to replace it. Spoke w/ dealership, and they're quoting me around $235 for the key w/ buttons & another $125 to program it. Should I have slammed the phone down on the receiver upon hearing those numbers? Is there a cheaper way to do this?

Thanks!

Can I then get it cut at home depot or similar?

How is it broken - metal separated from the plastic or electronics destroyed? If just separated you can buy a blank key that you just swap the electronics in to. Did that for mine - two pack on amazon was $10. Had the local wallymart cut on their machine - worked perfectly and he didn't even charge for the cut.

If you do, please post back with experience. Been thinking I need an extra or two and if they work you can't beat that price.

I certainly will. I had a couple large and unexpected bill jack up my finances for this month, but I'll try to scrape the times together. My fiance seems to have misplaced our valet key, which was the backup master, so I'm very anxious to have a couple new spares around. I think I'll be pairing them with these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Flip-Key-FOB-Shell-Remote-Case-Fits-Toyota-FJ-Land-Cruiser-Camry-/131450761874?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Model:Land+Cruiser&hash=item1e9b137292&vxp=mtr

EDIT: Ok, I couldn't resist. I pulled the trigger on the 2 pack I linked earlier. Should be here by St. Patty's Day, so I'll try to program and reply here shortly thereafter. Stay tuned.

 I just posted in the "Another Broken Key Shell" thread. I ordered a few flip keys because my wife seems to think the harder and longer she cranks on it the better it'll start.

*I'll leave the other possibilities of that for sChat though.

;)

They showed up today
I didn't look to close but the quality seems good. I'll pop one open and compare the quality of the PCB when I get a chance.

2001 LC. I bought very similar ones off ebay and had no problems getting the immobilizer to work as well as the remote. Worked like a champ on the first try. I had the plain (non remote) black key that turned the security light off quickly. So, it appears a "master" plain key can definitely program a "master" remote key.

Nice, how'd you get those so fast??? You do faster shipping? I went the free route... Let us know how they look, and if they program easily!
I live about 25 miles from the Amazon distribution center.

Did you get your blanks from Amazon or ebay? If amazon, do you have a link? I'd rather go amazon then ebay, just personal preference. Having a few spares would be nice so I'm definitely interested if the price is right.

Ah gotcha, I was confused and thinking you ordered from the link I posted. That's pretty handy being so close, I bet.
I was in error, I ordered from ebay. And I did go with free shipping, no idea why I got them so fast. I'll look at the shipping pouch when I get home and see where they came from.

Keys programed and remotes programed, all seems well so far. I followed the FSM programing procedure but had to help the lock on the driver side door cycle. The motor was not performing complete cycles. Drove me nuts for a while then I noticed the lock not completely closing and opening. I'll cross post this in the other thread.
