I need someone to give me a rough idea on the costs involved with fixing or replacing the following on a 60.

Engine overhaul

Knuckle job

A/C fixed... probably bad compressor

Tune carb (I know I already said engine O/H)

New springs

New seat covers

New interior rug

No need to be exact. I'm looking for some real numbers if you got them. Either do-it-yourself or dealer serviced.

Thanks.

I researched some of these quotes a while back. Here's what I got after talking to several shops:

Engine overhaul, complete rebuild- $2000ish

front Knuckles with inner axle seals/ rear bearings- $450(I had this done and was happy I did)

Carb rebuilds I think go for around $300ish

New Springs- I found mine on Craigslist new for $450 complete kit, installed myself. Shop quoted me $350 to install. New OME kit is over $1000.

That's all I've got for ya.

Full engine overhaul ~$4000

Front axle job ~$800

AC ~ $500

Carb ~$300

Springs, shocks, etc (OME) ~$1500

Interior stuff ~$500

Engine Overhaul (done right) - $3-3,500

Knuckle (you can do this yourself - parts $230) or $800 or more (very labor intensive)

A/C $4-500 if comp needed.

Carb rebuild $300

Interior carpet $400 (good stuff) - Seat covers Good ones $300

Springs/shakles/bushings/shocks $1400 - for everything

What you're asking is a good $6k or more -- but you'd have stinkin' great cruiser for that money!

Find something else out there for under $10K that'll beat a 60 series cruiser!

How easy or hard is the carb overhaul? Is there a manual and overhaul kit for the 60?

It sounds like I might be able to tackle that knuckle job myself, but I have no experience with them. Again, is there an owners manual that provides some guidance. Chilton's?

Don't do the Carb yourself - complicated. Send to Jim C. (fj40Jim here on MUD) or Mark Algazy (see my sig line for Mark's off road) ...

FSM - Factory Service Manual -- There are pdf downloads (search) or you can buy hard copies off ebay and most Land cruiser places. SOR - MAF Cool Cruisers - Cruiseroutfitters.com .... There are TWO FSMs: Chassis and Body Manual and Engine 2F Manual, get them both.

If you're gonna get your engine rebuilt, find someone who KNOWS 2F motors. Don't trust the local butcher.

Knuckle job and springs you can do, if you're fairly competent with tools or have a buddy who is... And you'll get plenty of help and pix here on MUD

Welcome, btw.

I just had my AC competely done (rebuilt compressor, new expansion valve & drier, removed and cleaned the evaporator, converted to R-134a). $850 parts and labor.

I see several people quoting $800 for the knuckle rebuild. I had mine done through CSP in McKinney, TX and it was less than that...and done very well. There are lots of 4x4 and toyota guys at that shop. For what it's worth...I almost did that job myself, but decided against it and took it to them. They said it was a tough, messy job that took longer than expected...so that one was worth 500 bucks to me.

There's something to be said for doing the majority of this stuff yourself. If you can afford to have the rig down for a few days all of these things are fairly straight forward. This forum has helped me a TON on rebuilding my motor, knuckles, interior, etc. Just in labor, I probably have saved $5,000 using these forums and the FSM.

Everyone,

Thanks for the input. This vehicle will be a project, so there won't be any hurry to get things done. I can take my time and do it right, hopefully.

On the engine rebuild, any reputable 2F shops on the east coast?

On the carb, MAF has a core exchange for a rebuilt carb. Would I run into any issues pulling the carb myself? Also, on a rebuilt carb, how much fine tuning needs to be done after the install? Do the factory settings work for all engines?

Thanks

Like Spike Strip said, send your carb to Mark or Jim. It's not hard to remove and replace the carb. Label the vacuum lines and take pictures. You'll also want some stubby wrenches. I think the bolts are 12 mm.

bbbeard, where is the shop in mckinney? i was using mr. ngeuyn (sp?) for repairs i couldn't or didn't have time for. he quoted me $900 for a knuckle rebuild. since i've used ben cahill in forney. i'd really like to do the knuckles myself but she's my dd so time is of the essence with all repairs and maintenance.

don't forget,
Transmission output seals
Transfercase output seals
Full Rear end

Mine is in similar shape - Over 10k for all the work with zero left for body or interior. (did not include any AC work)

I called a place in New England about an engine overhaul. They quoted 6-8000. Ouch.

Faugh!

You could buy a MAF motor and have it shipped to you for cheaper than that!

But will you R & R the motor, or have the shop do it?

If you're gonna have the shop do it, then that price might not be out of line...

Get in touch with Jim C. in OH it might be worth it to ship the engine to him or get in touch with the ACC guys in ATL.

Yup - x2

It'll be a hassle, but I can't stress enough about taking the motor to someone familiar with 2Fs -- I mean, you only want to do it once, right ? :D

There are a bunch of guys on the board in the NY - area. Maybe see who they recommend.

Good Luck !
