I can't find this in the FAQ, or through a search...

Does anyone have the correct grey color for the 40/45/55 series wheels?

I see that my hero buckroseau used DP50LF with a coat of clear on top of it, which is what I'll go with if nobody has the "correct" color code.

We got 5 OEM 15" steel wheels from CDan sitting in the garage, and the black is just not right for a 1979 FJ-40 (obviously), so we'll be painting them or possibly powder coating them. The local coating shop will do it for $65 a wheel, and it seems like painting them would be just as easy (since we can't fit the wheel into our PC oven), and a bit cheaper. I read Landpimp had some problems with the OEM black paint (chipped off while in the boxes), so we'll probably blast ours and paint them with the DP50 anyway.

So, like I said: anyone have any paint code for the grey?

Dan

DP is a primer, as such is porous, and is not suitable for a finish coat, even with clear. The first nick you get, will start a serious rust process. Pittsburgh has a spray paint called pit bull that's some tough stuff. Haze Grey or something similar would work fine. Easily touched up, and around 7 bucks a can.

I thought DP being an Epoxy primer meant that it was not porous like a primer surfacer.

I used it with clear coat on my wheels just like Buckroseau did and they have been out in the weather for months and still look great.

It wouldn't prime if it weren't porous...glad you're having good luck. Primer gives teeth for the paint to adhere to.

So if I choose to use something other than the DP50/clear combo.... does anyone have the "correct" color?

I've got a set of 16" splits that are the OEM gray, but may or may not be faded. I can match them, but I really don't have any way to be sure that the gray on the old rims is still the "right" gray.

Dan

Battleship Grey is all you need. As a matter of fact, I have seen many shades of grey on OEM rims. CCOT has a paint they sell which is "suppose" to be OEM for wheels.

Have you searched the 40-55 board? There's tons of OEM wheel color discussion. Can't remember the color codes but that's where I found and used to come up with as close as possible powder code for getting a new set of wheels I got from CDan powdercoated.

Quick update on the wheel situation....

Paint shop couldn't come up with a T1447, or an "electric cabinet grey," so we're going to go the DP50LF route. I figure, either way that primer is going onto those wheels, so if the color is all wrong, then I'll go buy some paint for them, and if it looks right, then the clear will go right on.

Guess what day tomorrow is? Paint day!

Also, how do you make a 60x30 foot shop crowded? Simple, park three Power Wagons, a disassembled White semi (the blue frame in the foreground) and a PVC paint booth in there.

The plow on the Green Dodge is actually setting up on blocks, because the door won't shut with it down on the floor. :)

Checking out your thread and I came across your paint booth. Great idea! Think that might just work for me. Contained, easy to assemble/disassemble, inexpensive what more could the wife want? Thanks for the idea.

Hope you have success with the rims. I want to get a set of rims from Cdan one of these days. Have a 78 that has been time consuming. When you think your finally getting ahead, there is always something else.

Post some pics of the finished products, would be interested to see. Trying to keep the costs down as much as possible, so like many of all of you doing much of it myself.

Ok, so today was paint day. Relatively warm here today (45 degrees), so the first order of the day was to get the shop nice and hot.

The PVC box, with plastic walls has two filters: one for incoming air, one for the exhaust. We built a duct out of cardboard boxes to duct the exhaust air out the rear door.

As you can see in the pic, the overspray inside the box was quickly pulled down and out the exhaust. Pretty amazing how fast the fumes and paint were drawn outside.

However, the wind today was blowing the wrong way (and gusting), so every time it gusted at the exhaust outside, I think it blew the paint back up the duct. Not into the paint box I built, but into the shop in general. It was super dry, so it's just dust. It was funny when I got out of the box (which had clear air) to notice that the air in the shop was misty.

The overspray blows right off with low pressure air. That's what getting blown back in from outside does to it!

And at the end of the day.....

They came out really nicely. That's DP50LF with two coats of clear to seal it (and make it shiny). I did get a couple of runs in the clear, but nothing bad at all. After all: they're just wheels, and much of them will be behind hubcaps. Not too bad for my first time spraying clear, and the first time I've painted anything for 5 or 6 years I'd say!

They cured pretty quickly because once the shop had aired out we fired up the heaters again. I had the paint box at over 100 degrees with all those heaters going.

Tomorrow, because the paint box is up (and I don't have to go back to work until Sunday) I'm going to paint my full floater axle housing with DP90LF. The paint jobbers (who have been awesome) think that the DP90LF will be a more than strong enough coating for the axles and frame. Basically a primer/chassis black all in one. We'll see. I figure that if the DP90LF doesn't work out for me, then I'll just use it like a primer and put chassis black over the top of it. We'll see what happens tomorrow.

They aren't exactly mine. Two belong to my Dad, one belongs to Mom. :)

I seem to do most of the work on them, and probably drive them the most though. I've got my HJ-45 and the 1949 White. It's good to have a never ending supply of projects, no?
