corner marker light, drop in dual filiment sockets (1 Viewer)

I'm a newbie with the 80 series as of 3/1, and have not received my factory manuals yet so please bear with me. Is it not possible to convert the corner parking light into a blinker by using a method shown on Daniel Stern's site, found here, by simply removing the corner marker ground wire and attaching to the blinker pulsed hot? Or is the 80's marker/blinker ground/power setup completely different?

I did that with my rear marker lights.

I would think it's possible. Try it out. The worst that could happen is a blown fuse.

You could also just swap the corner marker and blinker sockets, they are interchangeable. I, and several others, have done this.

So I just completed this thanks to Raventai's homework! And while you are correct there are 2 different types of waterproof 2.3mm terminals, they appear to fit in 'each others' spot!

So first off I pulled a total of 3 complete dual filaments from the wrecking yard Celicas, so I would have extra terminals, (so I wouldn't have to buy new ones!). However I changed my mind on splitting my wiring. Since I have my blinkers in my ARB bumper set up as dual filaments HERE as well, I simply unplugged my 2 wire side marker, added the blinker terminal in the place of the empty terminal, and plugged the new Celica light in. I didn't think I needed 3 blinkers, but you could easily accomplish this if you wanted. I slid out some of the extra Celica terminals and they do fit our holes, (now, that just don't sound right!), and make a solid connection.

Don't know what the factory service tool is but I just used an eyeglass screw driver to prop the terminals out, a bit tricky but just takes time. The 80's do have little plastic protector on each end of our plug that need to be slid out prior to removing the terminals, (pic below), but besides that the Celica & 80 plugs are very similar.

I think I had to change one of the terminals meaning the configuration was off from our factory location to the Celica's, (i.e. the blinker would have been the dim one and the marker would have been the bright one!) Hope that's as clear as mud!

Here's some pics and a video to show ARB & marker dual filaments...

1st pic - side by side comparison

2nd pic - before pic

3rd pic - complete. the tapped over wire is the factory ground from the blinker, I basically just unplugged both terminals from the blinker. If you wanted to retain your factory blinker you could simply use one of the extra terminals and wires from your 3rd wrecking yard light, (which is why I originally grabbed 3, just changed my mind and didn't want the 3rd blinker).

White plastic terminal protectors. These prevent the terminals from coming disconnected from both sides of our 80's connections. All they take is a slight flick of the screwdriver to get them loose. The Celica's don't have these

Pic 1- Blinker connection with plastic connector sliding out

Pic 2 - Both factory 80 connections, (blinker on left, marker on right). Note: white connectors near top on both still in place.

Pic 3 - Both connectors removed. Marker on left, blinker on right.

84 runner nice work,

where I ran into trouble was the male pin of the two pin plug for the stock turnsignals, I got new housings from Dan but the terminals there are different from the male 3 pin housing, both his book and the wiring harness manual say they should be the same but they do not fit.

I have been watching my local yard looking for another 2 pin plug but so I have not found any in other toyota's,

I could rob the parts from the original turn signal stub harness but then it would not be reversible, something I try to maintain in mods.

Raven,
Im all about being able to reverse it too. However what I did is completely reversible. I simply plugged in the blinker (+) to our existing (2 out of 3 wires used) connection for the side marker, then plugged in the 3 wire Celica adapter! I'll have to play with them again, I guess the pins themselves are not swappable, but the main plugs themselves are interchangable 2 pin to 3 pin, and visa versa.

Thanks again for all the research/homework you did to make this possible for me to do!

I've been watching you guys and this thread closely as I've been gearing up for doing my 1157/ARB-conversion real soon.

In addition to what's been described so far, I'll also be adding in hide-away strobes in the corner marker lights (for SAR & FD). The 1157 conversion is what opened up the limited real estate to make this possible.

2 Questions I have:

1) 84Runner, I saw your YouTube video and something struck me... you didn't wire your ARB and Marker lights in "Disco" mode! Was that by choice or oversight?
Could someone confirm the config, for a ARB&Marker light combo that includes the 1157 conversion?

2) I think I asked this before but not sure it even got a nibble. With the corner marker lights and ARB front lights (soon to be) wired up for parking/turn signals...I've been contemplating what to do with the OEM turn signals(immediately below the headlights). By chance, has anyone heard of converting that location to drop in driving or flood/fog lights? i figure its got good orientation for the purpose, but I haven't come across and manufacturers that make a light with the slanted ends like the OEM turn signals have. Anyone figure out a custom hack? Really interested in repurposing the lighting position here!

Thanks, fellas.

I think that the ARB sticks out too far. You woud either have the lights pointed straight out (blinding anyone oncoming in normal driving conditions), or have very very narrow slits there between the top of the beam and where it hit the bar.

You could do some blackout style lights. That might be cool.

Maybe fab up something like:

Thanks for the reminder, just added my ARB dual filament utilizing 1157 bulb mod link to my above post, click HERE for it. But yes I did the non disco on purpose, but only because my ARB light is an actual dual filament like you're referring to. The only way I've seen others do the disco mode is where the light in the ARB is turned OFF by the blinker (+) interupting the parking light, (i.e. only 1 filament in the ARB light). I dropped an 1157 bulb and socket in mine so it's actually a parking light and blinker.

Check my link to my ARB 1157 marker/blinker, I think it's exactly what you're talking about...

Ah, great.

Thanks for the update!
