Sorry for my ignorance... (maybe I just don't know the english word) what is a precup ? Precups goes in the piston chamber ?

BTW, by now, I think I will go for a head rebuilt. I know I know what some of you think about a rebuilt head, but I't way more cheaper than a new head. (more than 1000 $CDN, just the haed).

I talk with a friend of my father, a retire diesel mechanic teacher. He will help me to make the job (after rebuilding the head).

And in the same time, I will chance the ring aroud the piston and other few thing like that....

But only in june... hope that will be easy...

Bye... some news later.

The head you can do with the engine in the truck. If you're going to work on the rings it'll be real hard, if not impossible to do it in the truck. You need to pull the piston skirt oil cooling sprays and they are behind the injection pump etc. etc. Basically it's a complete rebuild short of replacing liners, pistons and bearings.

Where for $25?

That's what gwengineparts.com in Australia charged me when I did the 3B 2 years ago. I found out that I needed the head afterwards so I returned all but one that I keep as a spare.

I know I have to pull the pistion... that the reason why the jod will be done in june (the retired diesel mechanic teacher is in FL for some vacancy).

For the rebuilt...l will not completly rebuild... but most of the part he will recommend me to change...

Make sure you diesel mechanic friend knows that the engine has piston skirt cooling, not many engines do especially non-turbo'd ones. It's tough to pull the piston out the top and to go out the bottom the oiler MUST be removed.
I've rebuilt 2 3B's so I've been there, done that!

interesting, i have never had a problem removing and reinstalling the piston on a 3B out the top...
mind you i have only done a few 3Bs...
cheers

The two I did had carbon around the top.

you can buy a ridge remover tool...

I don't have one, being a back yard mechanic and all!! Besides the engine was on the stand anyways.
