with the amount of coolant that you are describing then a coolant pressure test will show it... also i use the same to help get rid of the air. remove the highest line near the firewall. if no coolant comes out then keep adding coolant till it does reattach the line and keep adding then do as Brcue suggested...
cheers

the leak down test will turn the green color purple of something like that. It's reAL easy to tell.

Hello
Take the heater hose off on the return to block and bleed it into a bucket of water, and keep rad full of coolant. Pressure side hose is off of water pump. Also if you have cracked head it is way cheaper to have it repaired from a good head shop. They can pressure test and weld cracks.
Also to check for compression leaks in coolant system, put a pressure coolant guage on rad and run engine @ very high idle, around 2000 rpm, until operating temp, and if guage climbs very high and quickly you have cracked head or gasket.

Hello
Also if you can rig up a clear plastic piece of hose on the intake side of water pump, you will see air from compression being sucked into the engine.

I've had a head hot welded at a specialty shop for about $400 including the valve job. It's much cheaper than a new head but in my opinion I'd prefer the new head on a truck I plan on keeping for a long time or one I'm going to get way off road or make long trips with (that's why the '82 BJ60 and the FJ55/3B have the aftermarket head and the '84 that I had got the repaired head).
I can't imagine the weld being as strong as the original.

Out from home for several day... I give you news later... If you have other idea or opinion I will be very happy to read it since my return.

Bye

go to napa and get a combustion leak tester. it's only like $50 and will tell you what you most likey don't want to know.

What is the brand name of that product ? How I make the test ? How I use it ? How it work ?

I try the rad cap....

So here the verdict : cracked head (F**CK) or head gasket. Anyway, at the point I am that don't make any difference cause I will open all the head.

Where I have to look for a "Aussie head c/w pre cups for about $800" like lowenbrau talk about ?

Where the best place (canada) to buy a haed gasket kit. Dealer, NAPA ? Diesel shop ? How much ±$ ?

In the full kit, is it came with the oil seal and the valva guide bushing ? And the two manifold gasket ?

Allhead in Australia is a source for the aftermarket head. You WILL need the head gasket, manifold gaskets and valve guide seals, all best sourced from the dealer. The local machine shop will need to install the valves in the new head. I would also have them look at the rockers as they often have a groove in them from the valve stems, making accurate valve adjustment impossible.

For the gasket kit... is I'm suppose to look at a :

- cynlinder head gasket kit
or
- engine kit gasket set

??? (in reference of the "rockauto.com" site) ???

It's a terminology question... I don't necesary want to buy there.

Head gasket set for the 3B is 04112-58042. It's only ~$200 USD. This is the one I used and it had all the seals/gaskets for replacing the head.

Someone have a opinion about the CORTECO head set ? (210226)

I think for long life you will ge a unanimous OEM vote, but it's your $$!

I think oem or allhead if you have the time. .There are more than a few folks that have the allhead. Plus you want to check on what precups run cause your going to need those too. I want to say that the cost on the OEM head was $750 usd. Not bad considering.

Precups are included in the aftermarket heads, at least they were in the ones I got!
