Tonight, while cleaning up the garage after R&R of the radiator, I was stripping the old one of any parts I may need later on, when I thought I might as well cut open the bottom tank and see what that cooler looked like. Turned out its a pretty bling stainless cooler, complete with its own mounting system. (just make brackets that use the nuts that held the cooler to the radiator tank).

It's going on the 40 as a P/S cooler. I know it is not finned like an air cooler should be, it will still increase system capacity by about a half quart, a cooler is better than no coolers.

Now the wheels are turning and I'm thinking about how I could use the engine oil cooler circuit to make my P/S cooler water-cooled too... :D

Note: It looks sort of greenish in the pic cause I hadn't cleaned it off yet when I took the pic.

this is the engine oil cooler, right? The ATF one is outside, correct? I don't remember...

I think that is the ATF cooler in the bottom of the rad, there is an external ATF cooler also.

What Raven said.

Interesting that there is both an air-cooled and water-cooled transmission cooler. I guess the water cooled one can serve to both warm and cool the ATF depending on engine/tranny temp discrepency.

interesting that there would be 2. Now I remember reading that the outside one was part of the "towing package". I also vaguely remember something about the oil cooler being buried on the side of the engine. Will have to check in the Bible...

and yes, a heat exchanger designed for water will have very poor performance in air. But, of course, it would be better than nothing.

I had my rad. on the 80 replaced , I got he old one back and took it apart, I was going to use the same cooler for the PS on the 40, I think it wouls need a decent coat of paint so it dosnt rust out.
Have fun

It's either stainless or aluminum. No paint necessary.

If it was going to rust, it would have already done so in the radiator.

Yes there is a water cooled engine oil cooler on the side of the block. I have also heard that the exterior Trans cooler is part of a towing package but they all seam to have gotten this towing package.

Cool, That will help with putting it on, I thought it might just be steel.
Thanks
