I have other sources of income. :) Hell, I make more money fixing mowers than I do working for the state.

Growing up, my family didn't have a lot of money, so I was taught the importance of being responsible, and saving money. I have had a job since I was in 1st grade; collecting aluminum cans from recycling bins. I started working (legally) at 15 and bought a Martin Guitar and my first car. Got a job lifeguarding for 8 years (working 70 hours a week during the busy summer months). Worked my way through college (working nearly full time while getting a very difficult degree), paying for my living expenses and paying for my mounting student loans. Engineering internships later on too.

I have always been driven to be productive and efficient with my finances. But sure, go ahead and mock my work ethic and make generalizations about my job.

So the .gov provides you your own truck? And you can take it to get tires?

It was running on original tires that were low on tread and cracking. Boss gave me the OK for new tires, and instead of the typical BFG ATs our trucks get, I opted for the Trail Grapplers.

And you bet your ass it is tax dollars hard at work. I put that truck through it's paces. I may not take my 200 offroad, but I take that truck into some hairy places weekly, from the mud/sands of Harrison county, to the sandstone and chert formations of Tishomingo County. I am driving about 20k miles a year, doing approximately 20 sand and gravel pit inspections per month (nearly every one requires 4wd).

I am not sure what I will get to replace the f150. I don't have much of a say. The DFA pretty much sets our budget (usually around $25k per vehicle). Keep in mind, we get VERY deep discounts on our fleet vehicles. I think my co worker got a brand new fully loaded f150 with center locking diff, and BFG ATs for around $23k.

Oh I'm just razzing ya. Feel bad? :p

But seriously, I hate the bureaucracy of my job. I hate the bull****. I will probably quit my job soon and find something new. I can't stay there until I am 50; it would be a giant waste of my life. With the growth of my small engine work, I may end up taking that route. I am almost to the point that I can't keep up with the demand; I may have to actually hire help.

I did all those things too. I had a paper route and lifeguarded and took flying lessons all in the same day for years. OBTW, Never said anything about your work ethic, I know you got work ethic since I have seen all the work you do on your trucks. I was just busting your chops. Cheers.

No problem. I think most assume I am a .gov employee and therefore label me as lazy. I feel like I have to go out of my way to prove that I am not. Just insecurities I guess.

that silver spoon had ice cream on it when I was growing up....

Center diff lock on a f150?

Yes; I had to engage it when I took his truck to Sunflower County. It was a giant mud pit. Its called Control Track or something like that. Its a knob right within the 4wd switch.

Here is a generic pic. You can see the icons at the 6 and 9 o'clock positions on the 4wd switch.

from the internets:

"The ControlTrac 4-wheel-drive system’s center "differential" is a electronically-controlled electromagnetic multi-disc (multi-plate) clutch pack. Through use of sophisticated control software, the multi-disc clutch imitates a traditional geared center differential. Under normal on-road conditions, it sends 100% of torque rearward, but can send 100% of torque forward if needed. While adjusting torque between the front and rear wheels the software watches for any drivetrain binding or torque windup, and controls the center multi-plate clutch "differential" accordingly to eliminate it.

4L 4-wheel-drive with low range gearing (2.64:1) Part-time 4-wheel-drive capability,
Continuous 50/50 torque split to front & rear wheels, Electronically locked center differential,
Front driveshaft & rear primary driveshaft mechanically locked with no rotational speed difference,
4-wheel electronic traction control system is enabled, ESC and RSC are disabled"

Interesting. You can tell I've been out of the Ford dealer since 2007. Then you had 2wd, 4 high and 4 low. Must have been changed for shift on the fly operation to actually work right and prevent people from throwing drive shafts and exploding transfercases. Can't tell you how many people had their trucks in under warranty complaining about a loud clunk and popping noise when they shifted into 4 high on dry pavement.

Ugh. The more complicated these things get the more I am in love with the 100 series.......

they are getting more and more complicated and more and more cheaply build. stupid systems.
