My wife and I are getting more serious about purchasing a 2016. I took one for a drive today. But I have some minor and obscure questions for current owners.

  • First, any issues at all with the new transmission? Shifting too much or too often?
  • Again, on shifting it seemed that when I put it in S mode it was only manual. It would not shift unless I forced it. This is different than our Land Rover and other vehicles I have owned where moving it to S mode made the automatic shift more aggressively (longer in lower gear) while still offering the opportunity to shift manually. I prefer the latter.
  • Off road camera mode? I thought I remembered test driving a 2014 a couple years ago where the camera system would allow you to use a mode where it literally showed the front tires about to drive up on a rock or whatever. I couldn't find that mode in the new camera system.
  • In fact aside from birds eye view I wasn't impressed with the new camera system. Was the 2014 and 2015 better/different?

Dan

The 2013-2015 shows you lines where it anticipates your tires will be based on the steering wheel. From what I have seen of the 2016 camera system it appears better in every respect. I have a 2013 and use the camera system at times in tight spots or while coming over a blind hill etc... The birds eye view would be awesome for offroading, IMO

  • Have no complaints re: the transmission, but the 2016 is the only year I've owned.
  • It sounds like you're looking for the "ECT PWR" button. See this thread for more details (it's a 100 thread, but should still apply) -- What is the "ECT PWR" button? 100 related..
  • Yep, there's a special off-road camera mode but it only shows when you're in 4LO. Looks like the following picture...

Thanks for the pics. I wondered if I needed to be in 4L to see the offroad mode camera. I had seen pics of the one in 2013-2015 and I really like the wheel placement lines. (I hate shelf roads but we have a lot of them here in Colorado. My is always saying that I have more than 5' of room before I am near the edge but I'm never quite comfortable guessing where my tires are.) Also looks like it might be helpful if I need to place a front tire on top of a particular rock or shelf. And of course my wife will love knowing just how much we are tipping sideways! I'm assuming it is not good to exceed 30 degrees tilt depending on how your truck is loaded.

Thanks for pointing me to ECT Power. That looks like the answer.

It's a shame about Land Rover. The last LR4 with the V8 2013 was the best they've ever made in my opinion. The new V6 seems wimpy and underpowered. The next gen LR4 looks even softer, not sure why TATA is killing tradition but the boxy look most of us like will be gone. I personally believe it's a better and more user friendly off-roader and platform than the LC. If it weren't for the unsure realiablity of the engine and air suspension I would most likely own one again. Welcome to LC and I'm sure you'll hate how dependable they are. Lol

I'll sell you my '14 so I can buy a '16 and have Slee build it up since i haven't seen one yet with all the goodies

In addition to offroad camera mode, there is a button on the dash (to the right of the steering column) that lets you turn the front camera (as well as bird's eye view cameras) on and off while driving at a slower speed - helpful with parking, tight spots, etc. There is also an option to have the front camera turn on automatically at slower speeds, but I haven't tried that setting.

I haven't noticed any issues with my transmission.

I have a 2013 and the image from the front/passenger mirror camera is so distorted that it is useless. Not sure why Toyota decided to use a CCTV camera module from the 80s on this truck. :)

I agree, Angelo. If I didn't need the V8 power and stronger, 850# rated integrated hitch receiver I would stick with my beloved LR4. I have had absolutely no reliability issues and the versatility of the vehicle both inside and out is awesome. But...

And, yes, though I haven't had issues with mine, I do believe that I'll get twice the life out of an LC. Now I just need to find a 2016 at a good price. ;-)

Sorry. I think I like the 2016. But tell you what, I'll have Slee build it up a bit then you can come look at it. ;-)

Looking forward to seeing it completed :-)
