Cold Air Intake, non-snorkel ideas

I have a hybrid TLC intake that routes through the front clip. If you look to the left of the headlight there is a stiff rubber flapper. I just routed tubing through that. It's protected enough that I don't worry about rain and it is just as high if not higher than stock. You could likely just replace the extension on the stock canister with a longer hose that extended to this opening.

I would like to change the routing of the air intake of the FJ62 to someplace cooler. I don't want a snorkel on this Cruiser. I think I may wrap the intake hose and air filter housing also.

I had thought about ducting it to the side vent.

Ideas? Everyone together say I'm nuts.....

Ok, I'll say it. The side vent is probably a very low pressure zone (it's meant to draw air out). You don't want to make your engine gasp for air against negative pressure.

That is probably true and odd enough, I was thinking about that last night. I don't know that the lower pressure area would be enough to starve the engine of air though, especially when I drive on logging roads. I'd like to run it forward, or seal off the inner fender from the engine? Hell, I don't know. I'll take a close look and see what I can configure.

You're right it's probably not going to starve the engine, but it's sure not going to help it at highway speeds. You should put on a snorkel for dust/water-free cold air.

Bill

edit: whoops, sorry I guess I didn't read the whole thread title

Stock 62 intake already has the short extension which sorta draws air from inside the fender so starvation should not be a concern.

Go look at a newer car in a junkyard.....alot of those have the in air IN the grill somewhat but keep in mind the closer you are toward the grill the more water and mud you are likely to suck in. This mod will not really increase anything substantial but maybe just slightly more cleaner air.

I'm mostly worried about the hot air it's ingesting. A cooler air charge will be more dense. I think it may help a little. 1-2 hp maybe?? I guess that isn't much, but I would feel better :D

I'll post up what ever it is that I end up doing. Even if it is just for fun.

EDIT:
The 2F-E doesn't run hotter, but due to the increased surface area of the block that is 2 1/8" taller, it radiates more heat into the engine bay.

cool...yep you are on the right train of thought:cool:

Maybe put a hole in the firewall and run the intake hose into the wiper housing... I have no idea what that area is called but maybe..... (Is it the cowl???)
If the manifold/header situation is anything like a 60, I doubt the cooler air will be much cooler when it hits the engine though. The combo intake/exhaust manifolds would seem to heat up the intake charge quite a bit. I could see a snorkle or some sort of pressurized air making a difference but not so much a cooler than stock intake location... Just my thoughts.

I'm pretty sure that the cowl is also a negative pressure area, and therefore not good for cold air intake.

What's wrong with the FJ60 stock air hose routing? It sucks in from right behind the DS headlight. High pressure, cold air, etc.
