hey all,

Well after 3 weeks with the new to me cruiser, my rig threw the above code with both VSC lights while cruising at 75mph. No noticeable change in drivability. Only mods I've made are 33s and HIR bulbs
From what I ve read here, it sounds like a Cat inefficiency code.
Really hoping I don't have a blown cat.
Any thoughts besides checking the O2 sensors and coil packs?
all other baseline maintenance has been done.
Thanks everyone. This board has been great.

It's a stupid code IMO. I currently have a 420 being thrown, same thing just a different bank. I did replace 3 of the 4 o2 sensors, which did not help me, but has for others. I would at least change both on bank 2 (PS), they are about 50 each off amazon. At the very least, yours are probably original so putting in new ones can only help.

After the above did not fix the problem, I spoke to my guru indy about it. They said that even after spending $$$ on new cats, many times the problem still persists :( There are other paths to remedy this though which I won't post here, but google it. FWIW, it's been 3-4 month and no adverse effects except the visual.

Thanks much for the advice.
Just ordered some o2 sensors for PS. Hoping it's a gummed up sensor.

The downstream oxy sensor is what reads the cat efficiency, you could check the voltages on both downstream oxy sensors to see if there is any difference. It should be a steady voltage, not varrying like the upstream sensor. Not sure what the reading should be on the toyota but bosch downstream sensor would read about 0.7v when good. you could swap the downstream oxy sensors to see if the fault moves. Also give the CAT a knock to see if you can hear it broken up. Have a look at the voltages and report back as this would help to diagnose. A faulty sensor will normally be a stuck voltage, you could check this by adding a air leak to see if the voltage alters.

This ^, but can also be a slow to respond situation. If one of the sensors isn't responding as quickly as the ECU requires, it'll trip the code. I had the same issue. I just replaced all four O2 sensors at the same time as I figured all four were probably original. At 147K miles...they were long overdue. Try replacing all four and see where it gets you.

Is your heater blow real hot on cold mornings. If not may be slightly low on coolant or bad thermostat.
FWIW: Engine not reaching normal operating temp, and cat(s) will not operate properly. I've seen this throw a cat code before.

Interesting-- heater is luke warm. Was low on coolant but has been since topped off. I was going to replace the thermostat and Ts anyways.

If the cat is bad the voltage normally fluctuates on the downstream sensor, mirroring the upstream sensor. This proves the cat isn't functioning as it should. If the voltage is steady but low then it is running rich so further investigation is required. Misfires kill cats so ensure the engine is running as it should before changing your cat, a vacuum gauge is a good tool for this. As you have ordered the sensors I would just change them and see what voltages you get. If they are the same from one bank to the other then just clear fault codes and hopefully it's a good job well done.

You probably have bad cats, the previous owner knew it, reset the code and now they are back on.
Really hoping that's not the case here.

Yep. Time to do the Ts!

Got these same things today + Check Engine

Drove exactly the same.

and my tire pressure light has been on 2 days as well... not sure if that had any impact
I read in some other threads to undo the gas cap and disconnect the battery for a few minutes
(my code reader is in the mail from amazon)
