DATES

Hey Steve do you have more solid dates for this trip Hammered out???
After some positive feedback about the weather from some guys that wheel out that way, I've posted up the dates to be October 4th-14th. Now thats MY total travel time and not what anyone flying would need. I'm figuring on 4th & 5th for travel and hope to be wheeling somewhere by Sunday the 6th :steer:; Then departing for the return trip the following Sunday, October 13th. So that'd basically put anyone flying at Saturday to Saturday I think.

Speaking of flying, who's thinking they might fly and who's thinking they might drive? Just another one of the many facets of the trip that we'll have to figure out: How, when, where to meet and who will need to be picked up and how we're gonna have a street vehicle during the trip to get the drivers between destinations. Certainly will be nice for going to the store (groceries and parts) and travelling to restaraunts on occasion.

Get on it son! I was gonna ask what trans you have to see if my extra 4.7 t-case would adapt to it, but with a V8, it's probly not a wise decision to go that route.

Man I'm gettin excited about this trip already with all the research I've been doin the last two days. I know we won't be able to fit it all in, but we're gonna see some amazing stuff - in regards to both wheelin and scenery.

O.K. All you working stiffs are gonna hate this but I got off October 2nd thru the 15th Steve! Will that work??? I gotta pull into the station by 7 a.m. Shaved and in Uniform on the morning of the 16th.

That'll work fine Henry; I don't plan to leave til after work Friday the 4th and I gotta be shaved and at work on the morning of the 15th.

Are you planning to fly out or ride or drive out?

So here's how I see it right now:

Only one spot positively left on the trailer at this time.
Henry and I are in and Ted is a strong 3rd.

WHO WANTS THE LAST SPOT?
Don't know a price yet, but I can assure you it'll be a lot cheaper than towing out there yourself.

Ted ---Ya Gotta do it man!!! Life is short--- Just like Cash. Take it from a Brain Tumor Survivor---Enjoy every day like its your last!

Steve I am very flexible. Can do either or , also pretty sure :princess: is coming along. She grew up with three brothers, and has been married to me 25 years so she can handle us wusses. Also an avid camper and great Dutch oven cook!

Also can we generate some more participants from the area clubs out that way???

In all honesty, I'd recommend flying. I drive rreeealll slow and stop to sleep often. Having a passenger would make it go faster and make me need less naps, but there's only two seats and a bed. One person would have to ride on the bed and what do y'all do when I need to sleep a few hours?? :frown:

It might be nice to have a :princess: along to keep things interesting - as long as she can handle our campfire banter. And I hope you know that, because of your comment, we will all be expecting at least one dutch oven meal now!

- Speaking of Dutch Oven cooking, we gotta look at what places we'll want to camp rather than pay for a hotel. I'm sure everyone will want to save some $ AND have a few campfires at some point.

Already working that angle. I have a thread going on Rocky Mountain Extreme asking about where they recommend and weather advice and parking questions, etc. As time goes by I'm going to be asking those that seem worthy (nice, polite, helpful, capable rigs) if they want to join, or even better, to guide for us. ;) Plus I'm going to invite the guy I bought my truck from and the guy who built a lot of it - both from the greater Denver area.

I agree Hendog, if'n we can do it for within the budget Steve and I discussed then I'm in.

Large groups are great around the fire but severely restrict the amount of ground we can cover, let's keep it within reason but I'm sure there's a few from TN that would be interested.

I'm sure we can Ted. You need to look at it like I am though: I'm going - PERIOD.

I actually agree that camping will almost certainly kill some time. IE: Camping = campfires = staying up late = getting up late. But I just can't see myself making a trip like this and staying INSIDE every night. Maybe just the Moab portion we'll do some camping between and/or on the trails. Besides, Henry [maybe] inadvertently volunteered his wife to do some Dutch Oven cooking for us. :whoops:

On a different note, we (the attendees and likely attendees) need to plan a get together or two down the road to discuss options, trails, travel, route, camping, hotels, money, etc. I'm sure this goes without saying, but I'd like to be as prepared as humanly possible. And the earlier we can get plans started, the better the odds of figuring out any deficiencies in a timely manner and solving them.

BUMP

Don't forget about this guys. It may seem like a long way off, but this trip requires a LOT of planning and prep work I think (for me and the attendees). We need to keep up the discussion now so as to narrow down and weed out anything we can as early as we can. I can easily plan a trip like this for just me, but adding in three other rigs with drivers and passengers adds a level of complexity I'm not accustomed to.

I was looking at airfare from ATL to Salt Lake the just other day thinking SLC was the closest major place to fly into, no bargains at $500! Of course, this assumes Henry and I will be flying.

How do you want to work the logistics of getting rigs n the trailer? You want us to hall them to Memphis or you gonna be down here somewhere around the end of September?

Where to fly into depends on which way we run the trip. If we do Holy Cross first, then flying into Colorado Springs or Denver is gonna be closer. If we do Moab first, SLC is obviously closer.

I'm sure I'll come get the rigs from Atlanta. Y'all are gonna be spending enough already on other stuff and fuel is way cheaper for me. Y'all can organize getting them all to one place for me to pick up or we can just all meet somewhere like a truck stop and go straight from trailer to trailer (John's place won't be a good option since I can't get the semi in there). That part of the logistics will be the easy part.

The hard logistics:
- Getting everyone to/from the trail or hotel and to/from the airport
- Getting everyone from location to location | Rent an SUV maybe? (get a diesel and I'll put WMO in it. haha)
- Timing the trail rides to have time to transport to the next one each day.

I was assuming Hendog and I (and hopefully the 3rd person) would get a rental car and drive directly to Moab but I guess we'll work that out.

SLC is 230 miles, Denver 350 and CS is 425. Airfare cost will play a role in the process too and a rental car is about $150 per week. Even thought about flying into Grand Junction and may still be an option but prices are all around $500 right now so will just have to monitor.

Figuring the same thing. Gonna have to have at least one street vehicle anyway to get to restaurants and parts stores.

Are those distances from Moab I guess? Flying into GJ, if going to Moab first, would save a lot of time; Moab is only about 60 miles from GJ if memory serves me right.

That's another thing that we need to determine more sooner than later: the schedule / "rotation" of the trip. Moab, GJ, Holy Cross or the other way around? Moab first will likely be the easiest for meeting up the fastest, but then how far will y'all have to drive after Holy Cross to an airport and/or rental car turn in spot. And to complicate further, the rental car turn in will likely not be able to happen on a Sunday unless at the airport anyway.

Have you thought about using a shipping carrier and ship the cars and gear (containerr)out at once. then drive out?
Thought you could ship a car for about $700

One of the biggest reasons for this trip is because I have my own transport and can do it a good bit cheaper. Besides, the drive between Holy Cross, Grand Junction and Moab isn't something that'd be too nice on a crawler; I'll be able to pick up and drop off the trail trucks at each trail head every day along with picking up and dropping off pretty close to home in Atlanta. THAT's service! haha
