Looking for help. We have an 83 FJ60 4 speed that hasn't been used for a few years. The clutch had been working fine. We just started using it (10 miles) and the clutch suddenly started slipping then quickly quit. Now the truck doesn't move. The truck behaves as if the clutch pedal is always on the floor, but the pedal works normally. The hydraulics seem okay (the fluid is full and the slave cylinder pushes the throw-out arm when we press the pedal) yet we can easily shift in and out of gears as if the pedal was always on the floor. The truck has some rust issues. Any help identifying the problem will be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Is the throwout arm loose when the pedal is released? You might have some rust on the tranny input shaft preventing the throwout bearing from sliding freely - just a guess. You might try removing the inspection cover on the bottom of the flywheel for a clear view of the clutch. Have someone operate the pedal while you watch underneath. Its either stuck, misadjusted, or worn out. Also look for broken springs on the pressure plate.

Thanks for the advice! Rust could be involved here. We'll open her up and take a look. I'll post again when we find out. I've been wondering if the slave cylinder is not retracting completely.
