Hi, I’ve got a 1990 HDJ81 5 spd that refuses to go into reverse, it’s like it’s in neutral whenever I try, my clutch is also slipping pretty bad, both problems started at the exact same time.
I’ve replaced the shifter bushing and was going to try replacing the clutch master but was wondering if anyone has some suggestions

Not being able to select reverse, sounds like maybe the clutch is not fully disengaging.

Reverse has no synchro rings, so any amount of gear rotation due to clutch not being fully disengaged will make selecting reverse or 1st difficult.

When do you experience clutch slip? What's happening?

One way to test the clutch for slipping is to find a flat open space ( empty parking lot) put it in 4th gear, rev the engine to 2000rpm and dump the clutch.
Either the engine will stall immediately = clutch ok, or the clutch will slip and engine won't stall immediately = clutch not good.

Your issue could be anything from worn out clutch plates (friction, or spring plates), bent shifter fork, worn out clutch fork pivot ball, bad slave cylinder, bad master cylinder, or pushrod adjustment

no issues in first and the clutch slips anytime theres significant load put on such as heavy throttle, going up a hill or driving into strong winds
