Clutch Slave Spring?

A couple of times I have seen a spring on the clutch release/slave cylinder. For example:

Mine doesn't have one, and I don't see it in my FSM, Chiltons, or SOR catalog. Is that only for later years or is it a mod, or am I missing something?
