Howdy!

Bear with my lack of knowledge.

My 1981 FJ40 will start up, but won't go into gear (any of them). The pedal is really slack. The spring is engaged, and I can't tell if there's a linkage issue.

Searching the forum mostly has results re: whole clutch jobs. Taking apart the master cylinder is above my skill set at the moment, so I'm hoping for a little advice or diagnostics I can use to assess what I'm dealing with.

Thanks as always!

Sir,

It sounds like there may be air in the line. I would check the clutch master reservoir, and bleed it if necessary. Bleed it at the slave with a friend. Then, you may need to find your leak......good luck.

Was it drivable recently? If so, what I just described may get you on the right track.

Good luck.

C.

This same thing happened to my 61, the slave cylinder was leaking fluid. Is your reservoir full? Are there any signs of fluid leaking out?

Sounds like a great place to start Sig191144. It hasn't been driven in probably the last 6 weeks, but then it drove (and shifted) like a champ.

Random Dan, there aren't obvious signs of a leak and the reservoir seems to have enough fluid.

Unfortunately my work schedule is getting crazy and I won't be able to work on it for at least the next week or so. I'll keep you posted though.

Thanks for your advice!
