Hi all,

So my clutch makes this cricket-like sound when it's fully released and the car is coasting along (or idle), looks like it's there at lower rpms when there's a little bit of vibration. Pressing the clutch slightly (i.e. putting a bit of tension on it, maybe 1-2cm of pedal press) stops the cricket. I verified that there are no actual crickets anywhere in the car (and it's not the season anyway), and my indy thinks that this bearing is going - 31230-60151, Bearing Assy, Clutch Release.

I'm curious if:

1) that seems about right (I have no reason to doubt him, he knows his stuff)
2) but more importantly, it seems like to replace this, the transmission needs to come out, according to him, and if that's the case, then the "while I'm there" rabbit hole begins, and so, what else should replace while I'm there? Any seals, parts, anything? Clutch itself?

been a while since ive had a manual car but the bearing that is pressed into the flywheel could also be causing the chirp sound, i think theyre called spigot bearings
I would always replace that one whenever I did a clutch replacement along with the one you have circled which is pretty much mandatory with a new clutch

you can just squirt water from a garden hose into that area where the fork boot is and if the chirp disappears for a bit you'll know

Yes, and yes.

Agree with @robnicko spigot aka pilot bearing can make noise too.

How many miles/km?

While you're in there, grind the flywheel,
change rear main seal on the crank.
Change the pilot/ spigot bearing.
Change the throw-out bearing
Seriously consider changing the clutch plate and pressure plate
Consider changing the slave cylinder too. Be sure to flush and bleed the clutch fluid.

Car has 150K kms. I have to check how expensive the clutch plate is - although the feeling that I have is the work will be far more expensive than the parts :) When you say pilot and spigot bearing - is one of them the clutch release, or is that a yet third one?

Pilot bearing is in the end of the crankshaft. It supports the top of the gearbox input shaft.

Aussies call it a spigot bearing.

The pilot bearing, and the clutch release bearing are both sealed units, so they have a limited amount of lube for life.

At 150k km, if the clutch hasn't been abused, it's probably got a fair bit of life left in it. Could potentially be good for another 100k +

Depending how you drive, and long term plans for the vehicle, might still be time to change it just because of the cost and time it takes to swap the clutch

Working on the parts list for this - thanks for the list. Am I correct in thinking:

- pilot bearing - "90363-15017 Bearing (For Input Shaft)"
- throw-out bearing = clutch release bearing = "31230-60150 Bearing Assy, Clutch Release"
- clutch plate = "31250-60401 Disc Assy, Clutch"
- pressure plate = ??
- slave cylinder = "31470-60180 Cylinder Assy, Clutch Release"
- rear main crank seal 90311-99009 / front crank seal / seal retainer? - any idea where these parts are listed?
- anything else?

Thanks - appreciate the help!

Bearing retainer shouldn't need to be changed.

You don't say what vehicle, what year, what engine, which market? (USA, Australia, Europe, Middle East?)

Where are you finding part numbers now?

Partsouq.com is a good place to find part numbers and parts

Oops, my bad. GCC spec 1994 80, VX-R, 1FZ-F (carburated, not injection), H151f manual transmission. Using Megazip for parts lookup.

11381ASEAL, ENGINE REAR OIL
90311-99006

Part diagram shows it on the timing cover diagram

Edit.
Looks like that part number is superseded by 90311-99009

Perfect thanks, added that to my message above!

What about the pressure plate, and is my slave cylinder part # right?
