I have yet to find the jumper from radio to SWR meter to tune mine. I know if I go buy another the original will turn up the next day

Ha. And if I took 30 seconds to re-read my manual I would remember my unit has a built in SWR/Calibration feature.

I've got a jumper, SWR meter, and an antenna analyzer. We'll sort out as many as we can that weekend.
CB's or Ham radios... that will be a good weekend to test and tune.

So the last couple time out my CB started acting up after being on for awhile. After some thought I went ahead and picked up a 2M radio (Yeasu FT-2900R/E) instead of trying to find someone to work on my old CB. Got it installed yesterday, haven't really played yet, not sure if i need to tune the antenna, i have read a few saying they are pretty close out of the box, also got a Comet 3D5M Mount (fits nicely on the ARB) topped of with a Diamond NR770HB antenna. I thought about getting a multi-band unit but couldn't justify the additional expense. I only have about 2 bills in the setup and the radio seems like a very solid unit.

Now that we're through Logan's Run and everyone went through inspection, what do you think? Is there anything you'd like to see changed or was the whole process OK?

piece of cake

Did any rigs not pass inspection?

No rigs that were registered for the event (pre-registration or walk-ins) failed inspection.

There was one that basically showed up for dinner Sat. not really intending to ride. He did get a red pen.

That radio worked well and 2 meter mobile to mobile is hard to beat, but...

I would suggest we remember that ham is not a substitute for CB's. CB's are what's on the inspection list so that's probably where we should concentrate our communication.

A few of us defaulted to ham radio on a ride and the rest of the club members on the trail were wondering what was going on.

Absolutely agreed. It was a failure on my part to verify that CBs were able to transmit clearly to another vehicle as stated on the inspection sheet. We simply checked that everyone had a radio. That won't happen again.

Honestly, in the spirit of being constructive, I was surprised how many trucks had no radios on the trail, so we couldn't communicate.

.... in addition to those with radios being split between CB and HAM .... no easy solution for that one.

i have a CB and hand helds but no HAM. I really have no heavy desire to get into HAM at this point, pretty much a whole other hobby in my eyes. I understand they have better range but I only use the CB or hand helds in the LC when on the trail.

I will continue to rig up my CB and have my 2M Baofeng on.

All said, the 2M band has a max effective range of 35 miles and a practical range of 10-15 miles. Did anyone try to contact the Group Camp site with 2M while out on the trails? May be not effective, either?

Yea, there were a few of us that talked from the trails back to group camp. Mobile to mobile was great, mobil to handheld worked ok, I didn't try handheld to handheld.

I didn't see a good CB to CB test that far but I think it would work well if you have a good antenna. CB handheld to CB handheld not so much.

I'm pretty active on 2 meter day to day and the range is impressive when you start using repeaters but since everyone in the club isn't licensed/into ham radio I want to get my CB tuned up a little better.

With all radios, the antenna makes or breaks it.

It's not like we have had somebody with an injured foot have to walk back when their diff grenaded and got left behind:grinpimp:

Having a CB radio is on the "evaluated items" list, not the "minimum" list, so we won't fail anyone for not having a CB alone. Everyone I inspected who did not have a radio was recommended to purchase one from the club, since we had them available. Alas, no one bought a CB from us.

Once again, a failure on the inspector's part. Everyone with a HAM had a CB (to my knowledge) but, for example, my CB was non-functional. It had stopped working sometime over the past 9 months and I never tested it.

HAM is a far superior technology, and it can actually be cheaper than CB, so I hope people will continue to move to it. However, the inspections will check for CBs only, including a function test, from here on out.

That said, it would be ideal for each group to have at least one HAM so they can communicate from the trail to Group Camp or between groups reliably, in case of an emergency situation.
