This route is a hidden gem in my opinion, and takes you through some of the most varied terrain in Montana and Wyoming. This has it all, from high alpine passes to deep red-rock canyons to deserts, wild horse herds, and even a cave with ice that never melts. In terms of miles, this one is a bit longer, but there's very little truly technical terrain here, mostly just a fun 4x4 run in the wilderness.

This trail is easily accessible to stock rigs unless you're on street tires and have very low-hanging side steps. None of the obstacles have a legitimate bypass, but I've not found any to be particularly challenging or even require a spotter, though we may find one or two spots that need it.

The route starts on the northwest corner of the Pryor Mountain range, then travels right across their spine down into the northern Wyoming desert alongside the Bighorn Canyon. From there, we can pop over to Devil's Canyon overlook for a nice view and a spot to have lunch, then back onto dirt to take a different, slightly more exciting return route up Sykes Ridge, where we'll be treated to sweeping views of the Bighorn Canyon and the Bighorn Mountains on the other side. We'll also stop at the ice cave and have a peek at an old homesteader's cabin, and very likely will see some wild horses, direct descendants of horses brought to North America from Hernan Cortes in the early 1500's.

The whole area is laced with a large number of roads, so there's a lot to explore.

I will not be camping Friday night as it's quite a short drive for me from Billings, but myself and my boys will probably be camping Saturday. If you want to head back home on Saturday, You can make your way out back from S. Pryor Mountain Road, or take the scenic route along Crooked Creek and back out to Hwy 310.

There's some great additional areas on the east side of the Bighorn River to check out if time/fuel permits on Sunday as well, so we may look into doing that.

Hope to see you there!

What would be the distance between fill ups?

Sounds like fun! Hoping to be able to make this one, but I can't commit yet. Been wanting to get over to Bighorn Canyon for a while now, might have to see if I can work that in on Sunday.

We are in for this one, looks awesome.

Planning to head down and camp Friday and Saturday. (Camping Suggestions welcome for Friday)

Anyone else heading down from bzn Friday HMU for caravan !

Sage Creek isn't too bad to camp, but there's a bunch of BLM camping near where Pryor Mountain Rd. meets Steven's Draw Rd. and Crooked Creek Rd. There's also a couple turnoffs before that along Pryor Mountain Rd.

I'll grab some coordinates when we pre-run.

Excited to have you guys along!

@WreckDiver1321, Do you want to do the pre-run this Friday or Saturday?

Saturday would be ideal, I was thinking about heading down with the family Friday night and camping somewhere.
Tom, Saturday is better for me as well. Do you have a location in mind where we can meet up down there? I'm not familiar with the area but have OnX.

Soooooooooooooo bit of an update on the route and recommendations.

@406Camper and I pre-ran the route on Saturday and found a lot of snow at the high elevation portion of the trail. The weather since has been quite warm and clear, so there's a chance we get lucky and it's passable, but it was a fair bit of snow, and you cannot get to the fork where Burnt Timber connects with Sykes Ridge, at least from the north side.

With this in mind, I think we take a very scenic but quite easy run along Crooked Creek down into Wyoming's Bighorn Canyon. From there, we have a couple options:
  • Head up Sykes Ridge not knowing if we can make it back to Sage Creek from there. Sykes spends quite a while in the trees, but it's all south-facing slopes, so there's a good chance the majority of the trail is clear and passable. If it's passable up to Burnt Timber Road, we can take that down to the bottom of Crooked Creek. Sykes is a very scenic trail, moreso than Burnt Timber, but it is longer.
  • Head up Burnt Timber knowing we'll either have to turn around or take Sykes back down. Same concerns but I'm pretty confident that route will be clear up to the top based on the topography.
  • Go with a sure thing and drop down to 14, cross Bighorn Lake, and climb up into the canyons on the east side. This is a smaller area and not as much mileage, but some really incredible scenery along the lip of the canyons out here. Plus, plenty of mining areas to explore and fun stuff to see.
Any input from the group?

Additionally, I am making a recommendation that everyone airs down prior to the meeting point. It's not a difficult road in, but the soil and runoff have made the route a rutted, rock-strewn mess. Highly recommend airing down here: 45.24013, -108.67123.

Total green horn here. Id love to do the longer trails but I'm concerned with my fuel range. I did some testing a couple of weeks ago and I was able to go ~55miles on half a tank in 4 low with the CDL locked....seemed ok to me. I was getting about 11MPG. I will be carrying an extra 5 gallons but do you think I should be concerned if we do the longer trail options?

I’m down to take the longer route and see some sights but have total faith that it’ll be awesome regardless which route. Thanks for putting this together @WreckDiver1321 @406Camper

Also sounds like we got a small group leaving BZN 1400hrs Friday, meeting at the Sinclair 45.7015, -111.02914
All welcome to join, LMK

How big is your tank? We ran a pretty extended pre-run and I used a little under 3/4 tank. Wasn't in 4lo a single time.

I'm quite confident another 5 gallons would be plenty for anything we're planning on doing as a club.
