This route is a hidden gem in my opinion, and takes you through some of the most varied terrain in Montana and Wyoming. This has it all, from high alpine passes to deep red-rock canyons to deserts, wild horse herds, and even a cave with ice that never melts. In terms of miles, this one is a bit longer, but there's very little truly technical terrain here, mostly just a fun 4x4 run in the wilderness.
This trail is easily accessible to stock rigs unless you're on street tires and have very low-hanging side steps. None of the obstacles have a legitimate bypass, but I've not found any to be particularly challenging or even require a spotter, though we may find one or two spots that need it.
The route starts on the northwest corner of the Pryor Mountain range, then travels right across their spine down into the northern Wyoming desert alongside the Bighorn Canyon. From there, we can pop over to Devil's Canyon overlook for a nice view and a spot to have lunch, then back onto dirt to take a different, slightly more exciting return route up Sykes Ridge, where we'll be treated to sweeping views of the Bighorn Canyon and the Bighorn Mountains on the other side. We'll also stop at the ice cave and have a peek at an old homesteader's cabin, and very likely will see some wild horses, direct descendants of horses brought to North America from Hernan Cortes in the early 1500's.
The whole area is laced with a large number of roads, so there's a lot to explore.
I will not be camping Friday night as it's quite a short drive for me from Billings, but myself and my boys will probably be camping Saturday. If you want to head back home on Saturday, You can make your way out back from S. Pryor Mountain Road, or take the scenic route along Crooked Creek and back out to Hwy 310.
There's some great additional areas on the east side of the Bighorn River to check out if time/fuel permits on Sunday as well, so we may look into doing that.
Hope to see you there!
