I'm going to clean the throttle body on my FJ62 while I'm removing, testing, and possibly replacing the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS). I've got the air intake removed... now here are my questions and some pics of where I'm at:

- Is it just the 4 bolts to remove it? Anything I should be concerned about removing them?
- Will the throttle cables and all come with it?
- Once I get the Throttle Body completely off, do I just spray throttle body cleaner into the Throttle Body and wipe out with a paper towel? Use an old toothbrush? Use water?
- There is a gasket between the throttle body and the 'EFI' right? Should I replace it? If so, can i get that part at a local NAPA or do I need to order one?
- I've read about folks putting a drop of motor oil on both ends of the throttle 'lever' pivot - Is this recommended?
- Should I also clean the 'giant intake hose'?
- Any other advise? I'll take pics as I go so that this can be recorded on ih8mud for future DIYs

So far, I've removed the harnesses to the TPS and the IAC valve, then loosened all the 'air intake clamps' which were pretty rusted up and required some silicon to loosen, removed any 'side vacuum tubes', then pulled the intake off.

PS - please feel free to correct my incorrect terms where applicable :)

I'm glad you posted this question, because I want to do the same thing to mine, so I look forward to what the recommendations are.

I believe there is coolant flowing through the throttle body, and there is a gasket in there too.

- Is it just the 4 bolts to remove it? Anything I should be concerned about removing them?
- Just the four bolts, yes. The top ones are bolts, the bottom ones are nuts.
- Will the throttle cables and all come with it?
You should disconnect the throttle cables. Easy to do and easy to put back. You should also check to make sure the throttle opens all the way with the cable pulled and closes all the way with the cable released.

- Once I get the Throttle Body completely off, do I just spray throttle body cleaner into the Throttle Body and wipe out with a paper towel? Use an old toothbrush? Use water?
Throttle body cleaner, paper towels, and toothbrush are what I used.
- There is a gasket between the throttle body and the 'EFI' right? Should I replace it? If so, can i get that part at a local NAPA or do I need to order one?
You should always replace gaskets when you take things apart. Auto zone had one for me within a couple of days.

Don't know this one.
- Should I also clean the 'giant intake hose'?
Why not? I don't think chemicals are a good idea, but just wipe it out with lint free cloth or something.

Torque value when putting the bolts back on is 9 ft lbs, I think.

Thanks for the advice I pulled the 4 bolts off and I'm able to look down into the throttle body it is filthy so I'm glad I'm doing this there are two 2 hoses on the bottom of the throttle body that I am having a really hard time with they just don't want to come off and I don't want to break them any suggestions for removal? I'll put some pictures as soon as I can

PS. The gasket was all but non existent completely deteriorated so I've called around locally in its gonna take a few days to get a new gasket so I'm probably going to have to put it back together and pull it back apart in a few days.... Is it bad to run with a gasket that is torn up

OEM gasket is N.A. Aftermarket or make your own are two options

Oh, and while you're in there you should probably make sure your throttle cable and TV cable (or, kickdown cable) are adjusted properly. But that's after the whole thing has been cleaned and put back on.

Hi, You can buy sheet gasket material from Auto Zone, Napa etc. Mike

Are you sure? I got one from the local Toyota place about a year ago.

Just got off the phone with local Toyota dealership. OEM no longer available. Probably going to make one. A lot of firsts for me on this project. Wish me luck.

Update:

Got the two hoses off the bottom of the throttle body using a little silicon spray and a pliers to twist it off... see pics below.

Then pulled the throttle body off the EFI and snapped a few pics. It's disgusting. Looks like a coal burning fireplace that's never been cleaned. Surprised this engine can even breath :)

I left the throttle cables attached as I don't really see a need to remove them... why re-adjust if its not needed.

QUESTION:

Should I also try to clean inside the EFI? What if there is some residual throttle body cleaner left over that i can't reach with a paper towel in there?

make sure those two little vacuum ports at the top are clear when you're done

Whoa!!!!

Mine looked damn near STERILE next to that! I guess the Previous Owner had cleaned it fairly recently.

I got the Fel-Pro as well. Went on dry... Hope I did that right!

Update:

Got the back side of the throttle body nice and clean (with a toothbrush, about 20 paper towels, and 20 minutes)... see below.

Manufactured myself a new gasket (as I don't have 3 days to wait for a after market one to arrive). Put it on dry... hope this is correct????

Replaced the two coolant hoses.

Pulled the TPS off and it doesn't seem to 'spin' freely... sortof gets stuck before resetting... so I 'exercised' it for a few minutes and now it seems to reset properly... maybe this will help when I get it all back together.

Now I just need to decide how much I want to clean the inside of the intake... I'll probably just wipe off the 'rim' as to avoid any clumps of carbon dropping down to the bottom and ending up in the engine... the guy at NAPA said I could spray some throttle body cleaner into the air intake while it's running to help clean 'some' of that carbon out of the intake... or some SeaFoam... any advise on getting the inside of the intake clean????

Getting ready to take my TB off for cleaning and to adjust/test the TPS and noticed the black thing below the cables in this pic...the one on my 62 doesn't have a cap on it... can post a pic later if needed. Does anyone know if it needs the cap?

Did you ever get an answer to this?? I don't see how it's possible to get all of that out but it can't be good. Mine looks that bad or worse...
