I' getting a code 71.

Found several posts where some guys speak of cleaning the carbon build-up out of the EGR intake tube.

I'm not sure what the EGR "intake tube" is.

There are 3 bolts that hold the EGR to the intake manifold.

Is this "intake tube" where the two right EGR mounting bolts are?

Can someone please elaborate on the process of cleaning or replacing the EGR intake tube?

Thank You,

you'll want to order/get an egr gasket first, then remove the big fitting on the bottom of the egr valve and remove the bolts that hold the valve to the intake. there is a tube which portrudes into the intake plenum that you can't see when it's bolted in place. when you pull the valve, pull it straight out, as you are pulling it you will see the tube you seek.....

Better have a torch to heat it up to get that nut loose, Mike

quick question for all. I twisted the head off the small screw that holds the small pipe on the outside of the EGR valve. Being a little OCD I have the desire to try and get the rest of the screw out with an EZ out and replace it, but the pipe doesn't seem to be loose or budge at all. Is it held in place some other way than the little screw (the one that is all rust in the picture above). I can see myself making a bigger problem by trying to clean this up. Any reason I should try and fix it?

Coincidentally, I was fiddling with my EGR assembly today too. Mine looked just like yours from the outside, soaked it twice with PB Blaster in an hour, let it sit overnight and it the nut popped right off with persuasion from a 1.25" combination wrench. The tube, however, will not be separated from the [EGR manifold?] no matter how hard I try.

You can see the dissection here, i'm a bit OCD too, so it might scratch that itch. https://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-wagons/589295-guru-weigh-efi.html

I'm in the same predicament.

The tube does come out. It's just held on by rust. I soaked mine with WD40 and kept wiggling it. It helps if you try to move it up and down first, then wiggle it out. I still have the dilemma of the broken screw. I've tried extracting it but I'm not having any luck. For the time being I cleaned the tube, put it back in, then zip tied it for good measure. It doesn't seem to be going anywhere, however, it's making my obsessive compulsive behavior worse. :bang:

Moving on to the EGR valve.....
