Pete contacted David and I a couple of weeks ago to give us the dates. David Molter sent him a preliminary list a few days ago. I just sent the updated list that includes the people that signed up at the meeting. David M will probably update the top of this thread with the additional names that I sent to him and Pete.
Just found out that I have both the 5th and 6th off so i'll be there both those days. My wife and I will try to get our tree on Sunday since we have better coverage on that day.
Hey scott my name is JT i'm a new member, I work at MHC Kenworth here in colorado springs, we have pallets of chains on sale for like 45$ they are longer than you will need but the width and all should be ok. i have 285/75 r17 tires, i just bought 2 sets, they say right on the bag all the sizes they cover for example the ones i got say fit 285/75 22.5 all i have to do is shorten them. and i think the 285/75 is like 33.2" tall and like 11.4" or wide close to 33's they also have ones for like 305/ 75-85 , and 315/75 - 85.
oh MHC Kenworth is at 2215 rand ave. circle and I25 area by tds tire and rocky mountain asphault.
Scott, If you want to buy some of those chains, I am getting pretty good at cutting them down--would be happy to help. Pretty easy with a welder and cut-off wheel.
JT, Would there be any of those chains that are about 16" wide and long enough for a 38.5 tall tire?
I have a lot of chains, but haven't caught a grader sitting still long enough to get any that big. LOL
I will check tomorrow on the way to Rainbowfalls, they have a couple different sizes I will right down the sizes and post here or make a new thread saturday after the ride. I think they should have some that might be tall enough since semi tires are about 40" to 42" or so the width I will check. If they dont I us to work at John Deere here in the spings and still know some of the parts guys there I will give them a call to and let you know.
I'm down to help you guys (scott, JT, Mark,Rui) We'll just have to schedule a time in you want to drive to woodland park. Tuesday night would work for me, not sure if it's too soon, maybe after Thanksgiving or something.
If you already have your chains, I am not doing anything sunday night.......Oh, and I drink Miller Light.
Been thinking about chains and if I really need them. At the price JT posted seems tempting but with the sliders on order I want to make sure it is money well spent at this time. Chuck said he has never needed chains, so with front lockers and good aggressive tires what do you guys think? I didn't have any issues on last winters trail rides but I wasn't breaking trail either.
I will put the chain debate to you this way, I have 4 of each for the 33's on the 96, the 35's on the 93, and the 37's that I don't even have all 4 of yet.
On Eagle Rock, I was wishing I would have brought them. But didn't need them.
Need to get another set for the 38.5's now.
Years ago we did Rainbow Falls and I was sliding all over the place in our 94 with no lockers and bald stock tires. David Hayes let me borrow his chains and I was going places everyone else couldn't. They make a WORLD of difference.
You don't need them often, but when you do they are worth it.
And as many people have learned in the past, practice putting them on before you NEED them. And put them on before you NEED them.
At this point it's doubtful that there will be enough snow to need chains. I could happen, but generally they aren't needed. Good tires and lockers will be a big plus though of course.
Do you need chains? No. would chains have prevented you from hitting the tree last year Leon? Yes. Are chains required for forward momentum? No. (you can run, but you can't crawl) Can you stop without chains? No. Do you have full control with chains? No, but the control is twice as good.
This is Colorado, last week it was 10 degrees in the mornings up here, this week it is 40 degrees. I say if you have a chance to get chains, get them. I rode down Old Stage road with them on last weekend, because once I lost control of my cherokee on the same road for no apparent reason.....Justin and Ben didn't have them.
The most trouble I have without chains is getting stopped on an incline or off camber section, then the butt end starts to slide around and you can't get straight again. Sure there are plenty of people to pull you out, but are you not going to get chains at some point anyway?
