Christmas tree cutting weekends for this year will be December 4,5 and December 11,12. Please post up which days you will be available to patrol. We meet at the Western Gas station in Woodland Park (8:00 - 8:30) and then procede to the Forest Service trailer at the middle school, and then to the chain up area at the sledding hill on Rampart Range Road (first parking area heading north). Bring tire chains if you have them, lunch for yourself and any guests, normal trail equipment for cold weather runs. This is one of the main ways that we can help the Forest Service and maintain good relations with them.

Eric,

Open diffs on a 4x4 with chains will go along way in the snow so lockers are not a requirement.

But lockers are cool!

Last year everyone was getting chains from the MHC Kentworth dealer in the springs, you have to cut them down, but I believe they were only 40-45 bucks a set. Great deal. Chains will help more than lockers in the snow.

I've got chains--just want chains and lockers to max out the coolness

slow down there buddy...you have to learn how to drive before you can "crawl"....4x4 humor :grinpimp:

Got any more info about this event? My family and I are looking for a place to get a tree...and any excuse to get one of my rigs out is appreciated.

Put me down for the 4th

The forest service issues Christmas tree cutting permits for I believe $15 and designates specific dates and areas that you can go to and search for the perfect tree, cut it down and take it home. The forest service will have some specific rules so I will refer you to them since I don't want to give you incorrect information. This is a great time to take the family on an outing. Many people send the day picnicking or sledding if we have enough snow.

The Colorado Land Cruisers club volunteers to patrol the area to support the forest service in this event. We get involved in things like pulling out stuck vehicles, look for lost dogs and people, post signs and sweep the area at the end of the day.

A lot can happen between now and then, I'm sure we will have at least some snow on the tree weekends. Probably not enough to sled or cause any trouble though. Andrew, I would say bring your ride just like it is, I think you will be fine...and if not we can practice recovery techniques on your rig.

I drywalled my garage last December. Worth every penny too!
I only took a tow strap, truck chains and a snow shovel last year but ended up not needing any of it. My 80 did great and it would be fun to have another one along this year.

I'm going to try to make all four days this year but i'm sure one of those will be a shorter day if the wifey wants to come along.

Also, please try to have a CB radio. It is not mandatory, it just really helps with the relay of info in your particular group.

We usually split into two or three groups, and the forest service will issue each group a radio so they can reach us. It's really nice to be able to talk to all the vehicles in the group. CB's have the range to reach people in your group, but not to talk to the other groups. (Yes ham radio people, we know your radios are better...but Please, let's not open the ham radio discussions ...... again...) :deadhorse:
