I'm in the process of getting my block ready for the machine shop, and while taking the timing cover off per the FSM, it says to "check thrust clearance of oil pump drive shaft gear" (Step 15, Page EG-91). The reason I'm taking the block out is because it lost oil pressure and ruined crank bearings, so I'm especially worried about oil related steps.

What exactly am I measuring here? Does the drive gear actually move in and out a little bit? Because mine doesn't seem to budge at all. The picture also shows the lever arm attached to the pump gear, but the movement arrows are on the crank gear. Also, is there a good alternative to the dial indicator with a lever attachment? I'm not sure I want to buy something so expensive that I'll only use once (hopefully). Can I use feeler gauges or something? Thanks for the help!

You measure the forward and rearward movement of the oil pump drive gear with a dial indicator. Feeler gauges might work too with reduced accuracy.

Do yourself a favor and just replace the oil pump / front cover for $300 so you don’t have to worry about the gear banging around like the sound of a rod knock on your new engine.
