I think it looked better without them to be honest, but now that I drilled the holes, I guess I'll leave them on. Maybe I'll get used to them.........

Paint 'em red and they'll look a lot better. I like the line, but the color makes it stand out too much.

Quickly, you have to cut them off before the infection spreads any further! It will first manifest itself in the rear. You could already have a Dana 35 as we speak. Hurry, before you get a the front 30 too!

LOL
Yes, the infection may spread. Funny that the ugliest part of the rig just happens to have come from a Heep! At least I recently installed the Toyota emblems so only about half as many people call it a Heep now. Yea, I think I'll paint em red and/or look for some different flares. I'm in Nebraska where there are no laws or at least no enforced laws, about tires sticking outside of the vehicle, so I'm not sure why I even put them on! Oh well, maybe if I drill a few more holes and get a few more scratches I'll become a little less nervous about wheeling it!

Another option I considered was to paint all the diamond plate flat black. Not sure how well paint would stick to that stuff, but I supposed if it was scuffed good and primered.......

I dont think they look all that bad. The idea is to stop alot of mud from being thrown up on your body, right? The tread plate looks ok too.....

Personally, I think the diamond plate would look better painted red if it matched the body. The flares would probably look better then, looks fine as it is though. What size tires do you have? Nice looking cruiser by the way. Alex:cheers:

it looks good, would be better if the flares were mounted level and the diamond plate was black. NO BLING BLING!!!!! i dont think the tj are a must with stock width axles and 35's im going fj60 axles and 37's on 17x10" rims so i might have to or it will look stupid!

Leave the diamond plate as is. However cut those front fender bottoms at an angle and put rubber on the bottom;)

acid etch and alodine

You'll need to acid etch it the alodine the metal, then prime and paint. Hook up with a guy that does aircraft maintenance at a small airpoprt near you. He'll have the stuff. It's standard aircraft maintanance painting procedures for aluminunm. An auto parts or body shop may have the stuff. I don't think you'll have restrictions on buying that stuff over the counter (acid etch) where you are but in places like California I think they have stricter EPA regulations.
BTW the flares look good.

My 2 cents... I like the fender flare look. You truck is sweet. But the flares make it look better. Drakeslayer is correct , Angle cut the bottoms for a more finished look

Thanks for the props guys! I came home from work just now and when I first saw the 40 sittin in the driveway I thought, Hey, those don't look bad!

I do need to cut the bottom of those front fenders huh. But rubber hanging down off them? I don't think I've seen that before, got any pics??

I think they look pretty good and like the angle idea as well.

Two quick questions: What have folks done to "refurbish" these? I've heard of paint, light sanding, light bead blasting... Won't paint just peel off if bumped etc??

anyone ever try (suppose there's no real resaon to refurbish unless they're really scratched up and sun dried.

Thanks

Use flex agent in the paint when painting the flares and they will hold up good will still scratch like normal paint. Most body shops do this when painting modern bumper fascia and flairs.

Yep! In fact, some of the TJ Heeps came with painted flares. I've only seen a few, but there are some painted from the factory.

I see what you mean sandrat about angling the flare. I do also need to cut the bottoms of the front fenders off like you did to match the rocker panel cut.

Next projects, rock sliders, a winch, and a bikini top! ;)
It never ends

Ill take them off your hands if you dont want them. i have been looking for them in oregon and washington on craigslist, etc and cant come across them. so if you decide to get rid of them i want them! but IMHO i think they look good

Krylon Fusion plastic paint sticks real well on these flares. You're obviously limited to their color choices but you can buy it at the hardware store. I smashed one of mine on Barrett last year and only got a few stress cracks in the paint. Those Bushwackers would have exploded with the same impact.

I had a set of SOR plastic flares, painted them too, problem was the rocks on the trails were scratching the flares and the body was not protected, so I just bent 1 1/2 .120 wall tube and welded it to the cut out fender and the bottom of the tub, very strong:cheers:
