I have a 88 62 with 170,000 miles. For the past year of so my check engine light has been coming on randomly at highway speeds. Sometimes it happens only 30 minutes into a drive, other times it might come on 2 hours into a drive, sometimes it never comes on at all. After I kill the motor and crank it back up the light goes away. I have no idea why its coming on because the truck runs well and all other gauges look good. Anyone have any ideas?

Check the threads. I am sure it is an o2 sensor, or worse yet a gas tank problem. Change out the o2 sensor.

I'll share my story:

My '62 is an '89. I have pretty much the same thing going on. Slightly different pattern. I get above about 45 mph and the CEL goes on. Stopping the truck and shutting it down turns the CEL off. Under 45 mph, no CEL ever. My mechanic said its a O2 sensor. He also said no hurry to change it. Run it a while, it won't hurt it. Hmmm. I been running it. No sweat so far.

sounds silly...but check all the vac lines. I had one broken off of one of my EGR VSV's...after I fixed it, no CEL.

And do check the codes as advised by the pros.
