I'm taking a look at this intercooler kit specifically designed for the 1HD-T (they also make a kit for the 1HD-FT).

4WDbits Landcruiser 1HD-T 80 Air to Air Intercooler Kit

That are NZD, so converted into USD is about 500 USD. Very cheap compared with other specific designs isn't it?

It looks like a really clean installation and it's incredibly easy to install (just take a look at the video).

The only think I don't like is the big bend on the left side, but I guess front mount units usually have much more bends.

The other thing I concern about is that I read many people complaining about the top mount intercooler units because of the heat soak of the engine.

Anyway, these guys report post-turbo temperature drop between 50 and 100 degrees (I assume celsius) depending on the circunstances, and without hood scoop!!. That surprised me, I thought that these units didn't work without a hood scoop, but they just say that it would "enhance efficiency at high speeds" and that "it uses air circulating under the bonnet".

What do you think?. Does it look good?, is that temperature drop significative?

Would an electric fan over it and a hood scoop solve the heat soak issue on low speeds?

sound incredible great if you ask me ..

I didn't have any space on front ( PS cooler and Aux AC fan ) to run a front mounted .. so I was thinking in a top mounted .. off course I will desing and run an hood scoop ..

Hi Tapage.

You are answering all my questions today!!

So you think this top mounted is a good bet. I'm also considering the water-to-air unit offered by this same company 4wdbits, but it's more than twice the price, and I like to keep things simple and reliable under the bonnet.

I know that the water-to-air gives more performance, but I'm not sure if it would be worth the more complicated installation and extra money spent. What would you do?

Did you notice a significative improvement with your top mount intercooler?. Have you thought in the possibility of running a fan on it at low speeds?

I'm curious about the 1HD-FT model... I wish the site had more pictures...pre-install, during-install for example. I'm trying to decide how easy it'll be to fit.

I was hesitating between this and the air-to-water unit, from the same shop:

4WDbits Landcruiser 1HD-T 80 Water to Air Intercooler Kit

The air to water is more efficient, but it costs more than twice as much and I like the simplicity and reliability of this air-to-air system, so I finally decided to get the air-to-air, in fact I'm ordering two this evening, cause my friend with another 1HD-T 80 series is getting one as well.

I'll post pictures of the install and give feedback when it's done.

For what I've read, the key in these top mounted units is to make a good hood scoop design.

I'm also considering to install a fan on the intercooler with an in board switch to turn it on at low speeds. Maybe it'd be better to place it under the intercooler sucking air from the top, instead of placing it on it pushing air into the intercooler. What do you think?

Have you seen the video with the 1HD-T installation?. It couldn't be simplier. I wouldn't say the 1HD-FT installations is much more complicated. Anyway, they advise that the 1HD-FT unit is not recommended in very cold climates with continous temperatures under -10ºC.

Now that sounds strange... I wonder whats the reason behind that...

Make sure to get the fuelling up to get the pressure back to where it was and let us know !

Would be interesting if you could take some temp measurements before and after the install.

They don't recommend either model - for the 1HD-T or the 1HD-FT - for cold climates since their air-to-air intercoolers require that you remove the stock heated air intake screen. A workaround for this would be to install the air intake heater - basically like a giant glowplug - from a late 7.3 Powerstroke. I've done that on an International 2.8HS, some of which have no glowlugs (the wastegated turbo models.)

Well, that's not correct in the case of the 1HD-T. I copy and paste what they told me:

"The 1HD-FT engine uses an external heater to warm the air for cold starting, the external heater is removed with the intercooler installation. The 1HD-T engine uses glow plugs for cold starting so isn't affected by the intercooler installation"

The air/air is good and compact with easy install, you just have to cut a hole in your hood. The water/air would perform better but finding place to install the fan and rad for the intercooler would be a real bitch - not much room under there.

I think the key is to design an specific hood scoop sized correctly for the intercooler and sealed to ensure all the air is crossing through the intercooler.

Another extra would be the installation of a fan between the scoop and the intercooler (or maybe under the intercooler sucking air, I don't know which option would be better).

I've read a lot of people in this and other forums talking about the chance of installing a fan in a top mounted intercooler, but I've never seen one installed or read about someone that had actually installed it.

Do you know about anyone?

After I make my desision I would try to found a Nissan Patrol intercooler .. coz the ZD30 engine come with a top mounted intercooler and electric fan ( nice fittment ) that actually its controlled by the ECU ..

In I can source one of those .. it will make the trick with a incab switch ..

And yes .. when I install the top mounted in Tencha it make a huge improvement at HW speed ( keep in mind my HW speed are from 80 to 120 km/h )

Fun enough you said that this afternoon I've been measuring a 2002 Patrol GR hood scoop (I don't know if that's the model with the ZD30 engine) and it's almost the right size for the 4wdbits intercooler.

It'd be great to have a fan that started under a certain speed (let's say 60 km/h), but I think I will use an inboard switch too (I have one unused from the beams I removed).

That Patrol fan you talk about, is located under or on the intercooler?

Thanks a lot Tapage (Again).

Wow, the air entrance in that Patrol looks tiny. Looks like the fan has to be almost all the time running if it wants some air. At high speed, wouldn't the fan be more an obstacle than an aid?

Anyway, if that's stock Nissan design, it has to work good, those Japs don't fail to often when engineering.

Interesting the rubber seals in the hood not to let the air go anywhere else but to the intercooler.

By the way, I thought you were talking about Tencha's intercooler, but now I see you talk about Marilu.

was a mix :hillbilly: I was talking about both ..

Anycase the Patrol ZD30 intercooler was not a factory option .. the fan over the intercooler it's an owner aftermarket adition and it's pretty popular in Australia ..

The other pic that show the intercooler alone it's from a 4M40 Intercooler and tha't my ideal stup .. with the fan under the intercooler .. so it didn't block the air flow at HW speeds ..

Can't wait to read about your results and to see your install. pictures.
Anyone has an idea on what to get as hood scoop?
