Hello all! I look forward to hopefully getting to know everyone. I'm the proud new owner of a 1969 FJ 40. She was running great for the first couple weeks I had her, but stalled out last night and had a helluva time getting her started back up. Tried to crank her up today and she's turning over but not firing up. Last night it sounded like she had a misfire so I suspect part of the problem is a fouled plug. Could yall recommend a good mechanic in the Charlotte area? Also, if anyone's interested in coming over to tinker with it id be glad to have you over and kick you some beer or cash if you can get her running for me.

Thanks!

A fee things to star with.
Check for spark
Check the plugs
Check the compression
Check fuel pump/pressure
Ignition points, if it has that kind

First of all, the MUD welcome!

:flipoff2:

I second the FT Mill guys...I suck at :wrench: and own an 80:meh:

Look forward to meeting you at the next local get-together!

Do you have pics of the 40?

Thanks everyone for the help!

I live in Uptown Charlotte.

I think its sparking but I'm not entirely sure/comfortable to check. My buddy who is a mechanic was in town with me last night when it stalled out on us. His bet is that a plug is fouled (sounded like it had a misfire after we got it started up again last night) and thats making it harder to start.

Pictures should be attached!

By chance were you driving down N. Tryon on Saturday morning? Saw a 40 same color as yours.

As you know it only needs spark / fuel / air to run. 1 plug should not shut down a cruiser. Cause it to run rough yes, but shut it down no. I would start with fuel and then go to spark. What kind of system are you running for coil and dizzy ?

Welcome. I am very close to downtonw clt. I think points will be something to check. If i remember right that year up to 75 came with condenser and points if the engine was not swap. You also have a resistant on top of the coil to avoid burn the point and condensor.

Let me know how that goes.

Welcome. I 2nd the guys in Fort Mill. Its call Toyota Techs but is also listed as J and M automotive. I suggest going down to talk to them in person when your ready. Solid guys and even better as you get to know them. Ive seen them get cruisers runnin that have sat idle in the woods for years. I call it the little cruiser shack and i have left many dollars there over the past 5 years!

by the way... Got a name?

Very nice... feel like i've seen it before.

Before you take it anywhere do the simple things I and others sugeested.... get, or borrow, a fuel pressure tester from Auto zone. Check for spark, get a compression tester (both that and a fuel pressure tester are great tools for old vehicles.... came in handy with all the old muscle cars I used to have, unfortunately it seems mine grew legs or I left them back home in Cali because I looked for them last night)

I second Darins that one plug shouldn't stop it from starting... now maybe two..... but if you think that is what it is and have found a fouled plug, go ahead and replace them they are cheap enough and you can check it off the list at the same time.

Jason Free has a good story to tell about the previous owner of my 40 breaking down on his drive home to TN and all it needed was to have the points replaced. I think it was a $4 fix. I hope it is something similarly inexpensive with yours.

Hope we'll meet you at the end of March at Mac's Speed Shop on S. Tryon (not South Blvd.).

Yeah start with the easy/cheap stuff and work your way up from there. Who knows when the PO replaced things. It's a good piece of mind knowing certain things are new and replaced by you, especially when troubleshooting...

Thanks for all the help guys! I dont have as much experience working on these things as many, so im a little hesitant to fool with things i dont know well. If anyone is bored this weekend, Id love to have you over to teach me some things. Im moderately intelligent and a good listener. Thanks everyone!

I may have some free time this weekend....i will have to check with the boss

Where are you on this project? I'd like to observe if you've got somebody coming that can help. I've never had this problem so I've not had to figure out a fix yet. I'm out near South Park/Arboretum area. Working on some electrical issues right now myself and hope to be rolling again by tonight.
