Hello...

I am going to change the exhaust gasket on my 1985 FJ-60 this weekend. I have never done this task and I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions regarding gasket-type, tricks, tips, look-outs, etc?

The sound when I hit the gas (click/click/click) is driving me crazy!

Thanks everyone,

Dan

get the egr gaskets as well

I did this a few months back. be sure to get the egr pipe gasket. Also I put 2 gaskets on mine. because this was my second time doing it . I bought them for 13 bucks each at autozone. However when i got it all back together it still has a slight "click" and it turns out its the egr pipe gasket so i need to go back and put that on. Good luck.

Exhaust Gasket on a 60

The intake & exhaust manifolds are siamesed, so you'll be changing both with one gasket. SOR has a thick one made out of Kevlar, I think, that I thought did the trick until I pulled the intake & exhaust & found a nice black smudge leading from one of the exhaust ports on my spiffy MAF ceramic-coated 6-2-1 exhaust header.

Pay particular attention to the surfaces of the head & the manifolds - all must be perfectly flat, with the manifolds machined to the same height for the bolts or they WILL leak.

IMO, there are only 2 kinds of 2F engines - the ones that need this fix & the ones that are going to.

Dan,

Actually, if you crawl underneath the rig and look on the driver side of the engine, you will see a pipe (item 2 of attached image) that runs from the egr cooler (item 4) to the exhaust manifold. In between the exhuast manifold and the pipe is gasket (item 1). Mine was completely loose. The only problem that you might have is getting the egr pipe off. If you loosen the egr cooler and use flex pipe (item 6 to swing it out of the way, you can get the pipe to come off the studs. My large 32mm nut (item 27) was also loose. Anyway, hope this helps. If you want I can take some pics. Let me know.
