Yeah, yeah I know, here comes a newbie with a problem, right? Well, that's me.

Shredded my fan belt, blew a couple of hoses and got left on the side of the road for the first time ever in my 1982 FJ60.

Have replaced the hoses, and bought extras for future use, and now need to replace the fan belt and of course my Chilton's manual has gone on vacation. I searched through the forum and saw some tips on how to do the installation, but I'd really like a step-by-step with pictures. Where can I find an online resource to help walk me through this process or is somebody willing to fax/e-mail me the pages out of their guide? I would go buy another, but can't find one in stock locally and know that as soon as I pay and order it mine will reappear. Again, this is for an '82 FJ60, original 2F, and dealer installed York A/C system.

Thanks in advance for any help.

birfield.com should have a downloadable .pdf Factor Service Manual for your truck. Im not absolutly sure they're still available and you may have to join or sign up to that site but it's well worth it there's a lot of info there, good luck to you.

Sounds like the same setup in my 82 fj60... The larger of the two will be held tight with the Alternator, Undo that bolt below it ( on the bracket) and it will loosen up enough to get off. The other belt going around the Smog, Water pump, Crank is held tight with the Smog pump. There is a bracket on the Smog pump the loosen and tightens the belt. It is easy to see if you look at it. This will loosen up and you can then remove the belt.

Do the above in reverse....

When you come to the larger of the two, there is no bolt that you can turn that will tighten the belt onces its on. You have to pry the ALternator out with a board and have a friend tighten the bolt under the Alternator. I have done this by myself a few times but it is easier with another set of hands.

P.s. All of this is super easy

good luck,

The belt for the radiator fan is fairly simple. Attached to the alternator is the belt tensioner. It's got two bolts on it (I think 12mm). Loosen the one facing you first. Then start loosening the one that faces the passenger-side fender. You'll see the alternator start pivoting inwards toward the engine.

You should be able to slip new belt in and fit it around the crank pulley, alternator and fan. Then tighten up the tensioner so that the belt isn't too slack.

I don't have pics and my description would be better if I were looking at it, but that should give you an idea.

find the reason

make sure you find the reason that the belt shredded... just an old belt or ?

you could have bad waterpump or what ever... make sure all of your pulleys are straight; as they should; are not nicked and there is no play in their shafts, etc.

that, or you could be doing this twice and will become expert at it.

Heck, I still have the original manual in the glove box. I didn't even think to look there.

Still would like to find my Chilton's or see a copy if somebody's got it....

The "fan" belt is 'behind' the Alt + P/S pump.
Alt + P/S pump is tensioned, as mentioned above, by moving Alt ( my 60 has tensioning bolt). Remove this belt.

"Fan" is driven by belt on smog pump; smog pump has tensioner bolt..

You may need to loosen 'pivot' bolt ( on bottom) of Alt & smog pump so they'll swing.
